Chapter 1: The Name That Changed Everything

“My mother, Margaret Ellis.”
The words echoed through the church.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Even the candles seemed to stop flickering.
I looked at Mr. Halden, certain I had misunderstood him.
But the lawyer only lowered his eyes and continued reading.
“Emma Vale’s final wishes begin with a transfer of ownership. The entire Ellis-Vale estate trust, including the family properties, investment accounts, and private holdings, shall be placed under the control of my mother, Margaret Ellis, until further instructions are completed.”
A wave of whispers exploded across the church.
Evan’s expression changed instantly.
The confident husband who had walked in laughing moments ago was gone.
Now he looked like a man watching a door close before he could escape.
“That’s impossible,” Evan said.
His voice was no longer warm.
It was sharp.
Mr. Halden calmly looked at him.
“Actually, Mr. Vale, it is legally binding.”
Celeste tightened her grip around Evan’s arm.
“What is this?” she whispered.
Evan ignored her.
He stepped forward.
“My wife was emotional. She was pregnant. She wasn’t thinking clearly.”
My blood ran cold.
My daughter had spent months protecting him.
Even when she cried.
Even when she knew about Celeste.
Even when she discovered the messages between them.
Emma still defended the man she loved.
But now Evan was standing beside her coffin, calling her unstable.
I looked at him.
“You don’t get to speak about my daughter like that.”
The entire church went silent.
Evan stared at me.
Maybe it was the first time he realized I was not the grieving mother he expected.
I was Emma’s mother.
And mothers remember everything.
Mr. Halden opened another document.
“There is more.”
Evan’s face became tense.
“More?”
“Yes.”
The lawyer removed another paper.
“This letter was written by Emma three weeks before her death.”
My heart stopped.
A letter.
From my daughter.
“To my mother,” Mr. Halden began reading, “if you are hearing this, it means I was unable to tell you the truth myself.”
A tear slipped down my cheek.
But I stayed standing.
“I need you to know something, Mom. I was not happy. I was afraid.”
The room became heavier.
Celeste looked uncomfortable.
Evan looked away.
“I discovered Evan was not only having an affair. He was also trying to gain access to my inheritance before the baby was born.”
Gasps filled the church.
I closed my eyes.
Because deep down…
I had feared this.
Mr. Halden continued.
“He pressured me to change my will. He told me my mother was too old to manage the family assets.”
Evan immediately interrupted.
“That’s a lie!”
Mr. Halden looked up.
“Would you like me to continue?”
Evan stopped.
Because he knew.
There was more.
“There are recorded conversations, bank documents, and private messages attached to this case.”
The church erupted.
People who had comforted Evan hours earlier now looked at him with disgust.
Celeste stepped back.
“You said nobody knew.”
Her voice was quiet.
Evan turned toward her.
“Not now.”
May you like
But it was already too late.
Because Emma’s final words were about to destroy everything he built.
