Chapter 12 - WHAT GRACE HAD KEPT

Grace didn’t deny the photograph.

“I met him,” she said.

“Six weeks ago.”

“Yes.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You told me he contacted us three weeks ago.”

“He agreed to give a statement three weeks ago.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No.”

Claire folded her arms.

“Explain.”

Grace looked at Ethan.

“Luis called the office. He asked whether Vanessa could access your messages. I said yes. He hung up.”

She had called him back from her personal phone.

They met.

He told her about the replacement part.

But he wouldn’t provide documents.

He feared Nolan.

He feared losing his job.

He feared admitting what he had accepted afterward.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Ethan asked.

Grace’s voice shook.

“Because I checked your email settings after that meeting. Vanessa was forwarding copies to an address I didn’t recognize.”

“You still could’ve spoken to me.”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“I was scared. And I made a decision that wasn’t mine to make.”

Ethan looked away.

He had spent the night stripping authority from people who treated him as someone incapable of handling the truth.

Grace had done it for a different reason.

The result still hurt.

“I needed you to trust me,” he said.

“I know.”

For several seconds, no one moved.

Then he said, “From now on, you tell me what you know. Even when it’s incomplete.”

Grace nodded.

“No more protecting me by keeping me blind.”

“No more.”

At Ruth’s office, the backup folder contained the missing half of the story.

Company emails.

Draft loan agreements.

A payment schedule.

Their father had collected them quietly.

One message from Reed to Nolan read:

Voss will not fund this while Ethan retains unrestricted voting authority.

Another discussed “temporary medical delegation.”

Dated before the crash.

Lydia read without speaking.

Then she found a handwritten note from their father.

R. says these are hypothetical.

Ask Ethan whether he agreed.

Ethan had agreed to nothing.

At the bottom of the folder was a separate packet concerning an old investment loss.

Reed had used company funds to cover it.

Vanessa had signed an approval after the fact.

That was the leverage.

Reed’s theft.

Vanessa’s signature.

Nolan’s access.

A partnership built from everyone’s worst decision.

Lydia’s phone rang.

Graybridge’s attorney.

They were moving the deadline forward.

Ethan had until five the next afternoon.
