Chapter 11 - THE LETTER HE COULDN’T ANSWER

Ethan sat on the study floor because getting back into the chair felt too difficult.

Claire sat beside him.

The envelope held a three-page letter and a copy of an unsigned acquisition agreement.

His father’s words were plain.

No speech.

No final wisdom arranged for a movie.

Just concern from a man who had noticed something wrong.

Reed is pushing this harder than he should.

He keeps saying I’m too attached to the business.

Maybe I am.

That doesn’t make him right.

Ethan stopped reading.

Claire waited.

Their father had described unexplained payments, a valuation that seemed too low, and Vanessa’s sudden interest in the family trust.

Then came a line Ethan read three times.

You love her.

I respect that.

But don’t confuse loving someone with letting them answer every question for you.

He covered his eyes.

Claire spoke quietly.

“Hey.”

“I let her keep you away.”

“Yes.”

“I let Reed—”

“Yes.”

He dropped his hands.

She looked straight at him.

“I’m angry. I’m also here. Both can be true.”

For the first time since the ballroom, Ethan cried.

Not elegantly.

Not in a way he could hide.

Claire took the letter before it slipped from his hands.

When he could breathe again, she gave it back.

The final page described a backup folder stored with their father’s accountant, Ruth Bennett.

A code was written at the bottom.

Ruth answered Claire’s call herself.

“Yes,” she said. “I have it.”

They arranged to meet immediately.

Then Ruth paused.

“Ethan, Reed already came asking.”

“When?”

“Two weeks after your accident.”

“Did you give it to him?”

“No. Your father told me not to.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

One person had held the line.

That was enough to make him get up.

With Claire’s help, he returned to his chair.

As they reached the front door, his phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

A photograph of Grace entering the garage with Luis six weeks earlier.

Under it, Vanessa had written:

Ask your assistant why she waited to tell you.

Ethan looked across the driveway.

May you like

Grace stood beside the car, holding the passenger door open.

And suddenly, he didn’t know what to ask first.
