Chapter 11 - THE OLD HOUSE

The Cole house had been empty for seven years.

Adrian hated it before he even entered.

Too many memories lived there.

His father shouting across the study.

His mother’s piano.

Christmas mornings before money became the only language the family spoke fluently.

Detective Park’s team remained two blocks away.

Claire had demanded Adrian come alone.

Technically, Elena stayed hidden in the SUV outside.

Adrian entered through the front door.

“Claire?”

Her voice came from the study.

“In here.”

Adrian walked slowly.

Every step hurt.

Claire stood beside his father’s old desk.

No Julia.

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Where is my sister?”

“Safe.”

“You used an old photograph.”

“Of course.”

Adrian wanted to cross the room and shake her.

Instead, he sat.

Claire smiled.

“The wheelchair suits you better when you don’t use it as theater.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You tried to kill me.”

“No.”

“Grant cut my brakes.”

“I didn’t know he’d go that far.”

“You were standing beside him.”

“I thought he was disabling the car.”

Adrian laughed in disbelief.

“That sentence isn’t the defense you think it is.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“You were destroying everything.”

“My company?”

“Our future.”

“There was no our future after you started stealing.”

“You never understood what I gave up for you.”

Adrian stared.

Claire’s voice rose.

“I spent six years standing beside you while everybody called me Adrian Cole’s fiancée.”

“You wanted the name.”

“I wanted a life.”

“You wanted control.”

“I wanted what you promised me.”

“I promised marriage. Not ownership.”

Claire’s face twisted.

“You would have replaced me eventually.”

There it was.

Not love.

Fear.

Entitlement.

Rage.

Adrian leaned forward.

“So you and Grant manufactured my incapacity.”

Claire said nothing.

“Then you filed marriage documents.”

“You were supposed to sign them.”

“While medicated?”

“You knew we were getting married!”

“And the trust amendment?”

Her eyes flickered.

Enough.

Adrian heard a faint click in his earpiece.

Detective Park was recording everything.

Claire suddenly smiled.

“You think you’re clever.”

Adrian’s heartbeat changed.

“Why?”

“Because you came wired.”

His blood went cold.

Claire reached behind the desk and lifted a signal detector.

She had known.

“Take it off.”

“Claire.”

“Now.”

Adrian removed the transmitter.

She dropped it into a glass of water.

Then the study door opened.

Grant walked in.

Holding a gun.

Adrian stared at him.

May you like

Grant smiled.

“Now we can finally have an honest conversation.”
