Chapter 1 - THE EMPTY WHEELCHAIR

“Roll yourself out.”
Claire Beaumont seized the handles of Adrian Cole’s wheelchair and spun him away from the banquet table so hard one wheel squealed across the marble.
Then she leaned close enough for him to smell champagne on her breath.
“I already told everyone you couldn’t stand being dumped.”
The joke landed exactly where she wanted it.
A few guests gasped.
Several others looked away.
One man laughed before realizing nobody else had.
Adrian said nothing.
That bothered Claire more than anger would have.
“What?” she snapped. “No clever comeback?”
Adrian’s fingers rested beneath the brown plaid blanket covering his legs.
His untouched champagne remained on the table behind him.
Three hundred people filled the Whitmore Ballroom.
CEOs.
Politicians.
Donors.
Old-money families who could smell scandal before dessert arrived.
Claire released the chair and smoothed her red gown.
Then she slipped her arm through Grant Ellis’s.
Grant had once been Adrian’s chief financial officer.
Now he was apparently Claire’s date.
Maybe more.
Grant raised his glass.
“You actually invited him?”
Claire smiled.
“I wanted him to see what winning looks like.”
Adrian finally looked up.
“You rehearsed that one?”
Claire’s smile tightened.
Before she could answer, a young banquet attendant crossed the ballroom.
Her name tag read ELENA MARQUEZ.
Adrian remembered her.
Earlier, she had asked whether he wanted his wheelchair positioned inside or outside the table.
She had asked.
Not grabbed.
Not assumed.
Not spoken to the person beside him as if he were invisible.
Elena stopped beside him.
“You okay?”
Claire rolled her eyes.
“He’s fine.”
Elena didn’t even look at her.
“I asked him.”
That got attention.
Adrian studied her face.
No pity.
Just anger she was trying to keep professional.
Elena crouched beside the chair.
“You don’t have to stay here and let people treat you like this.”
Adrian stared at Claire.
Then Grant.
Then the guests pretending not to watch.
“I stayed because I needed to know something.”
Claire frowned.
Adrian pulled the blanket away.
It fell onto the marble.
Claire’s face changed.
Adrian placed one polished shoe on the floor.
Then the other.
Grant slowly lowered his champagne flute.
Adrian gripped the armrests.
Pain tore through his right hip.
He pushed anyway.
And stood.
The ballroom went dead silent.
Claire took one step backward.
“You can walk?”
Adrian straightened his jacket.
“Always could.”
That wasn’t completely true.
But nobody in the room knew that yet.
He turned toward Elena and held out his hand.
“Come with me.”
She stared at it.
“Kindness just earned you the seat they wanted.”
Elena didn’t move.
Instead, her expression hardened.
“Was this a test?”
Adrian hesitated.
Claire’s mouth curved into a slow smile.
Elena stood.
“So you let everybody believe you were helpless just to see how they’d behave?”
“My injury is real.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Cameras were turning toward them now.
Adrian realized Elena was not impressed.
She was angry.
“You think kindness is something you can test people for?” she asked.
“I think people show who they are when they believe you have nothing to offer.”
Elena shook her head.
“And you just showed who you are when you believe you have everything.”
That hit harder than Claire’s insult.
Across the ballroom, several guests murmured.
Grant suddenly looked pleased.
Claire looked delighted.
Elena stepped away from Adrian’s offered hand.
Then she said the one sentence Adrian never expected.
“You’re not the only person in this room pretending to be something you’re not.”
Adrian stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
Elena looked past him.
May you like
Straight at Grant.
And all the color drained from her face.
