CHAPTER 2 — The Secret Victoria Tried To Bury

The police car stopped violently on the cliff road.

Two officers jumped out.

“Step away from the vehicle!”

Victoria froze.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

One officer ran toward Daniel and Emily while the other kept his eyes on Victoria.

“Drop the knife!”

Victoria slowly lowered her hand.

But she smiled.

“You don’t understand.”

The officer stared at her.

“Understand what?”

Victoria looked at Emily.

“She was never supposed to survive.”

Everyone went silent.

The officer’s expression hardened.

“What did you just say?”

Before Victoria could answer, Emily suddenly remembered something.

A conversation from three weeks earlier.

Victoria had been on the phone.

Emily had walked into the room unexpectedly.

She remembered Victoria saying:

“Once the baby is gone, the money becomes mine.”

At the time, Emily thought she misunderstood.

Now…

She knew the truth.

“Daniel…”

Emily whispered.

“She planned this.”

Daniel looked at Victoria with disbelief.

“You were going to kill my wife and my child…”

Victoria laughed.

“You have no idea how much money is at stake.”

The officer walked closer.

“How long have you been planning this?”

Victoria stayed silent.

Then the second officer returned holding a small device.

“Found this in her vehicle.”

It was a recording device.

Everyone looked confused.

The officer pressed play.

Victoria’s own voice filled the air.

“We just need one accident.”

“People will believe the car lost control.”

Emily covered her mouth.

Her entire body shook.

She wasn’t hearing a confession from a stranger.

She was hearing the voice of someone she trusted.

Someone who had hugged her baby.

Someone who had called herself family.

The officers immediately arrested Victoria.

But before they took her away, she looked back at Emily.

“You think you won?”

Emily stared at her.

Victoria smiled coldly.

“There’s something your father never told you.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Enough.”

But Emily stopped him.

“What did she mean?”

Victoria said nothing.

She only smiled.

And that scared Emily more than anything.

Because Victoria wasn’t finished.

Later that night, after Emily and the baby were safely taken to the hospital, Daniel sat beside her bed.

Emily stared at the ceiling.

“I trusted her.”

Daniel held her hand.

“I know.”

“She held our baby.”

“I know.”

Tears rolled down Emily’s face.

“How could someone do that?”

Daniel had no answer.

Because sometimes the most dangerous people weren’t strangers.

Sometimes they were the ones sitting at your dinner table.

Then the hospital door opened.

A lawyer walked in.

He carried an old envelope.

“Mrs. Emily Carter?”

Emily looked confused.

“Yes?”

The lawyer placed the envelope on the table.

“This belonged to your father.”

“He instructed me to give it to you only if Victoria ever tried to take control of your inheritance.”

Emily opened it slowly.

Inside was a letter.

Only one sentence was written.

"If Victoria shows her true colors, trust no one until you discover the truth about your mother."

Emily’s hands began shaking.

Because she had always believed her mother died years ago.

But now…

May you like

She wondered.

What if that wasn’t the truth?
