Chương 12 - The Part of the Truth That Hurt

Luca didn’t speak for a long time.
He stood beside the kitchen table, looking at his father’s face.
I knew that feeling.
A photograph could become something else without changing at all.
“Does that prove he knew about the fire?” Luca asked.
“No,” Hannah said.
“It proves he was present.
We need the rest.”
Nora spread the old investigation papers beside the notebook.
The official report said the emergency exit was unblocked.
My father’s photograph showed otherwise.
Someone had altered the description.
The change had been approved by Nora’s supervisor.
A payment in the ledger matched a consulting invoice issued to him three days later.
“This is enough to reopen questions,” Hannah said.
“It doesn’t answer every one.”
Ben worked on the damaged recording using a copy recovered from the laptop.
He could restore sections.
Not everything.
We heard my father’s breathing.
A car passing.
Then Victor.
“You should have taken the money.”
My father answered.
“There was a woman inside.”
A third voice followed.
Luca’s father.
“I told you to stop this.”
Victor snapped back.
“You told me to wait until your people were clear.”
The recording broke into static.
When it returned, Adrian was speaking.
“Everybody here has a problem.
Daniel can make it smaller.”
The file ended.
No confession about my father’s crash.
No clean answer about Luca’s father.
Just enough truth to show how much more had been buried.
Luca sat down.
“My father told me that fire nearly ruined him.”
“Maybe it nearly exposed him,” I said.
He nodded.
It hurt to watch him absorb it.
It didn’t change what we had heard.
Vanessa entered with Hannah’s assistant.
She had given a recorded statement.
Her face looked bare without its practiced smile.
“My father keeps duplicate records,” she said.
“Where?”
“At his office.
An old safe behind the reception cabinets.”
Luca looked up.
“What records?”
“Payments.
Agreements.
Insurance documents.”
“How do you know?”
“I copied something from it last year.”
She handed Hannah a small flash drive.
It contained photographs of contracts and a handwritten index.
One entry referred to Daniel Parker.
Beside it were initials.
A.S.
And a date.
The day before my father’s crash.
I leaned closer.
“What does ‘vehicle adjustment’ mean?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Hannah’s expression hardened.
The entry listed a payment to a repair company.
My father’s van had been serviced there.
Then Vanessa showed us a message that had just arrived from Victor.
