Chapter 3 – The Little Girl Who Testified

The courtroom was overflowing.

Reporters filled every available seat.

The story of a wealthy executive whose daughter had been secretly abused inside a luxury mansion had spread across the country.

Vanessa entered wearing an immaculate white suit.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect smile.

She waved politely toward the cameras.

Richard barely looked at her.

His attention remained on Sophie.

She wore a pale blue dress and held the same stuffed rabbit she had carried into the judge's chambers weeks earlier.

When the prosecutor called her name...

The entire courtroom became silent.

Sophie climbed into the witness chair.

Her feet couldn't even reach the floor.

The prosecutor smiled gently.

"Sophie..."

"Can you tell us why you hid food?"

She looked down at her small hands.

"Because food disappears."

"What do you mean?"

"If I had bread..."

"...I could still eat tomorrow."

Several jurors lowered their heads.

The prosecutor continued softly.

"Were you afraid of Miss Vanessa?"

Sophie nodded.

"Every day."

"What made you most afraid?"

For several seconds...

She couldn't answer.

Then she looked toward Richard.

He smiled through tears.

"You don't have to protect anyone anymore."

Sophie took a slow breath.

"She told me..."

"...that if Daddy loved me..."

"...he would already be home."

Richard closed his eyes.

The courtroom remained perfectly still.

Then Sophie reached into the pocket of her little dress.

She pulled out a flattened piece of stale bread wrapped inside an old napkin.

"I kept this..."

"...in case nobody fed me again."

Gasps echoed through the room.

Even Vanessa's attorney lowered his gaze.

The jury didn't need another explanation.

The verdict came back in less than two hours.

Guilty.

On every count.

Vanessa's smile disappeared for the first time as deputies placed handcuffs around her wrists.

She looked toward Richard.

"This is your fault."

Richard answered quietly.

"No."

"You did this yourself."

As Vanessa was led away...

Sophie buried her face against her father's shoulder.

May you like

This time...

No one pulled them apart.
