Chapter 2 – The Hidden Camera

The criminal investigation moved far faster than anyone expected.

Richard had believed the medical reports, the school records, and the testimony from former employees would be enough.

He was wrong.

The detectives found something even worse.

While clearing the mansion for evidence, one investigator noticed a tiny blinking light behind a decorative smoke detector inside the pantry.

It wasn't connected to the home's security system.

It was hidden.

Deliberately.

The technician removed the cover.

A miniature memory card slipped into his hand.

Richard frowned.

"I've never seen that camera before."

The detective nodded.

"I don't think you were supposed to."

Hours later...

They watched the recordings.

The first video showed Sophie standing beside the kitchen table, accidentally knocking over a glass of water.

She froze.

"I'm sorry..."

Vanessa didn't answer.

She simply carried Sophie's untouched dinner into the trash.

"No food until you learn respect."

Sophie quietly whispered,

"Yes, Miss Vanessa."

Richard buried his face in his hands.

Another recording.

Late at night.

Sophie stood outside the locked pantry, her tiny stomach growling loudly enough for the microphone to capture it.

She knocked once.

Very softly.

"I'm hungry..."

No answer.

She slowly walked to the dog bowl resting near the back door.

She looked around to make sure no one was watching.

Then...

She picked up a handful of kibble.

Richard pushed away from the table so violently his chair crashed onto the floor.

"I can't watch this."

The detective reached for the remote.

"There is one more file."

The timestamp showed three months earlier.

Sophie stood beside the front window wearing her school backpack.

She smiled.

"Daddy's home!"

She ran toward the entrance.

Before she reached the front door...

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

"Back upstairs."

"But Daddy's here!"

"He has important work."

"I just want to hug him."

Vanessa crouched until their faces were level.

"If you interrupt him again..."

"...you won't eat tomorrow."

Sophie immediately stopped struggling.

She quietly walked upstairs alone.

Richard stared at the frozen frame.

Every business trip...

Every late-night meeting...

Every missed dinner...

Vanessa had turned them into weapons.

He whispered through tears,

"I never abandoned my daughter..."

"...she made Sophie believe I did."

The detective quietly closed the laptop.

May you like

"Mr. Hale..."

"This case just became much bigger."
