PART 2 — The Nurse Who Found What Money Could Not

The first thing Sofía Reyes noticed was not Mateo’s crying.
It was the silence between his cries.
A pattern.
A clue.
Something fifteen specialists had missed.
She stood beside the crib, watching the baby’s tiny fingers curl in pain.
She did not rush.
She did not panic.
She did not reach for expensive machines or complicated tests.
She simply watched.
Mateo screamed when the silk blanket touched his arm.
But when Sofía gently removed the blanket, his crying softened.
A few seconds.
Only a few seconds.
But it was enough.
Her eyes narrowed.
“Interesting…”
She carefully removed the designer pajamas.
The baby’s skin underneath was covered in small red marks.
Not random.
Not a disease spreading from inside his body.
A reaction.
Sofía opened her medical bag and took out a small flashlight.
She examined every inch of Mateo’s skin.
Then she looked at the crib.
The mattress.
The blanket.
The clothes.
Everything.
A wealthy child’s room.
Perfect.
Beautiful.
And possibly the thing hurting him.
Outside the nursery, Nicolás stood motionless.
The billionaire who could intimidate entire boardrooms was now staring at a closed wooden door.
His mother stood beside him.
“This is ridiculous,” Leonor said.
“She is wasting time.”
Nicolás said nothing.
“She is a public hospital nurse, Nicolás. Not a world-renowned specialist.”
Still nothing.
Leonor looked at him.
“You are allowing desperation to make you weak.”
That sentence finally made him turn.
“No.”
His voice was low.
“Desperation is the only thing keeping me standing.”
Leonor became quiet.
Because she had never seen her son like this.
Not after losing business deals.
Not after enemies tried to destroy him.
Not after years of fighting for power.
Nothing had broken Nicolás Velasco.
Except his son’s pain.
Inside the nursery, Sofía lifted Mateo carefully.
The baby immediately started crying.
But this time, she noticed something else.
His breathing changed.
His body became tense.
She looked down.
The bracelet around his wrist.
A tiny golden bracelet.
Custom-made.
Expensive.
Beautiful.
And tight.
She removed it.
The crying stopped.
Not completely.
But enough.
Sofía stared at the bracelet.
“No…”
She examined it closer.
A small piece of fabric was attached inside.
Almost invisible.
She took a cotton swab and rubbed the material.
Then she looked at the result.
Her face changed.
“This is not an illness.”
Exactly one hour later, the nursery door opened.
Everyone rushed forward.
Nicolás was first.
“How is he?”
Sofía stepped out slowly.
Mateo was sleeping peacefully in her arms.
For the first time in seven weeks.
Peacefully.
Valeria covered her mouth.
A broken sound escaped her.
“My baby…”
She touched his cheek.
No screaming.
No crying.
Just sleep.
Nicolás stared.
He could not speak.
The impossible thing he had been searching for was standing in front of him.
A simple woman in an old uniform had done what millions of dollars could not.
“What did you do?” he whispered.
Sofía looked at him.
“I listened.”
Everyone became silent.
“You searched for a disease.”
She looked toward Mateo.
“But your son was not sick.”
Nicolás stepped closer.
“Then what was wrong?”
Sofía held up the bracelet.
“This.”
Leonor frowned.
“That bracelet was made by the finest jeweler in Europe.”
“I believe you,” Sofía replied.
“But expensive does not mean safe.”
She explained carefully.
“The material inside the bracelet contains a chemical coating. Your son’s skin has been reacting to it.”
Valeria’s face went pale.
“How long?”
Sofía looked at Mateo.
“Probably since he started wearing it.”
Nicolás slowly turned toward his mother.
Because Leonor had been the one who gave Mateo the bracelet.
The room became colder.
Leonor immediately shook her head.
“Are you accusing me?”
“No,” Sofía said calmly.
“I am telling you what happened.”
Leonor looked at Nicolás.
“Are you going to believe her?”
Nicolás did not answer.
Because for the first time in weeks…
his son was sleeping.
And that was the only truth that mattered.
That night, Sofía prepared to leave.
The mansion looked different now.
The same marble floors.
The same expensive decorations.
But she saw something beneath the wealth.
Fear.
A family drowning behind golden walls.
As she reached the front door, Nicolás stopped her.
“You saved my son.”
Sofía turned.
“I found the problem.”
“No.”
His voice softened.
“You cared enough to look.”
For a moment, the powerful businessman disappeared.
Only a father remained.
“I was wrong about you.”
Sofía gave a small smile.
“You were afraid.”
Nicolás looked away.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“I was.”
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his expression changed.
“What do you mean the laboratory report was altered?”
Sofía stopped.
Nicolás looked at her.
“The bracelet was not the only problem.”
May you like
His voice became darker.
“Someone knew.”
