Chapter 14 - THE MAN BEHIND THE MONEY

Richard Vaughn had been Ethan’s mentor.

For fifteen years.

He had taught Ethan how to negotiate land deals.

How to survive recessions.

How to build Bennett Development from three employees into a national company.

He had attended Emily’s funeral.

He had held Sophie as a baby.

He had introduced Ethan to Vanessa.

Ethan suddenly remembered.

A charity dinner.

Richard had said, “There’s someone you should meet.”

Vanessa.

The room seemed to tilt.

Hale spread documents across the table.

“Richard knew Daniel Cross.”

“How?”

“They invested in a failed project together.”

Ethan stared.

“Daniel accused Richard of fraud.”

“And Vanessa stole money from Daniel.”

Hale nodded.

“They had shared interests.”

“So Richard helped her?”

“Looks that way.”

Ethan felt rage rise.

“Why target Emily?”

Hale hesitated.

“Emily had discovered irregularities in one of your companies.”

Ethan stared.

“She handled our family accounts.”

“She found transfers.”

“To Richard?”

“Yes.”

Everything connected.

Emily had discovered Richard stealing.

Vanessa had already been working with Richard.

Emily had to disappear.

Then Richard introduced Ethan to Vanessa.

Vanessa gained access to Ethan’s finances.

They continued siphoning money.

Sophie accidentally witnessed pieces of it.

And Vanessa began terrifying her into silence.

Ethan whispered, “Where is Richard?”

Hale’s expression hardened.

“Missing.”

The same afternoon, Ethan received a call.

Richard.

Ethan answered.

“You son of a bitch.”

Richard chuckled.

“Still emotional.”

“You helped kill Emily.”

“I did no such thing.”

“You brought Vanessa into my life.”

“She was useful.”

“Sophie is four years old.”

“That became Vanessa’s problem.”

Ethan gripped the phone.

“Where are you?”

Richard ignored him.

“You always had one weakness, Ethan.”

“What?”

“You mistake loyalty for goodness.”

“You stood beside me at Emily’s funeral.”

“Yes.”

Richard’s voice remained calm.

“And you thanked me for being there.”

Ethan nearly threw the phone.

“What do you want?”

“Vanessa has copies of transactions.”

“She’s in custody.”

“And I need to know what she gave police.”

“Call them yourself.”

Richard laughed.

“You’ve finally learned.”

“Learned what?”

“Not to trust.”

The call ended.

Hale traced it.

A private hangar outside Los Angeles.

Police arrived before Richard’s jet could take off.

He tried to flee across the runway.

He didn’t get far.

Two weeks later, prosecutors charged Vanessa Bennett with attempted murder, murder-related conspiracy charges connected to Daniel Cross, financial fraud, child abuse, and multiple offenses connected to Emily’s death.

Richard Vaughn faced conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and charges related to Emily’s killing.

Cole accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.

Ethan attended the first hearing.

Vanessa entered wearing jail clothing.

No designer dress.

No diamonds.

No perfect hair.

She looked smaller.

Human.

For the first time Ethan realized something.

Vanessa’s power had never come from beauty.

It came from people believing the version of reality she created for them.

She looked at Ethan.

Then smiled.

He felt nothing.

Vanessa mouthed three words.

You loved me.

Ethan stared back.

Then quietly answered.

“No.”

Her smile disappeared.

“I loved who you pretended to be.”

May you like

The guards led her away.

But Sophie’s hardest battle was still waiting at home.
