Chapter 1 - DADDY HEARD EVERYTHING

“You’re lying! You hurt me every day!”
Four-year-old Sophie Bennett’s scream cut through the Malibu house like a knife.
Then came the sound that terrified Vanessa even more.
A man’s voice from the dark hallway.
“She isn’t lying.”
Vanessa froze.
The glass of ice water stopped halfway to her lips.
Sophie turned.
“Daddy!”
Ethan Bennett stepped into the kitchen.
He was supposed to be in Chicago until Friday.
It was Tuesday.
Vanessa had no idea he had taken an earlier flight home.
And judging by the look on his face, Ethan had heard enough.
Sophie ran toward him.
Ethan dropped to one knee and opened his arms.
She crashed against his chest.
“Easy, sweetheart.”
His hand touched her ribs.
Sophie gasped.
Ethan immediately pulled back.
“What hurts?”
“Nothing.”
She said it too quickly.
Vanessa finally found her voice.
“She fell yesterday.”
Sophie shook her head violently.
“No!”
“Sophie.”
Vanessa’s tone changed.
It was only one word.
But Sophie flinched.
Ethan saw it.
He slowly stood.
“Don’t speak to her like that.”
Vanessa forced a laugh.
“Like what?”
“Like she should be afraid of you.”
“That’s ridiculous.”
Ethan said nothing.
Vanessa smiled.
The warm smile she used at charity dinners.
The smile neighbors loved.
The smile Ethan had married.
“Sweetheart, you’re tired.”
“I’m not tired.”
“You just flew across the country.”
“I said I’m not tired.”
Vanessa’s smile weakened.
Sophie tightened both arms around Ethan’s leg.
“Daddy, don’t leave again.”
His jaw locked.
Vanessa sighed dramatically.
“She’s been incredibly emotional lately.”
Ethan looked down.
“Sophie.”
She raised wet eyes toward him.
“Did Vanessa hurt you?”
Silence.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Ethan, come on.”
He didn’t look at her.
“Sophie.”
The little girl’s lower lip trembled.
“Yes.”
Ethan’s face went still.
“How?”
Sophie looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa gave her a tiny shake of the head.
Ethan caught it.
He stepped directly between them.
“Look at me, Sophie.”
Sophie stared at her father.
“You’re safe.”
“She pinches me.”
Ethan inhaled slowly.
“Where?”
“My arms.”
Sophie touched her side.
“And here.”
“What else?”
“She pushes me in the closet when I cry.”
Vanessa exploded.
“That is enough!”
Sophie jumped.
Ethan turned.
His expression silenced Vanessa instantly.
“Never raise your voice at her again.”
“You’re believing a four-year-old over your wife?”
“I’m listening to my daughter.”
“She makes things up!”
Ethan reached for Sophie.
“Come here.”
He lifted her carefully and carried her toward the living room.
Vanessa followed.
“What are you doing?”
“Checking something.”
“Ethan.”
He ignored her.
He sat Sophie on the couch.
“Sweetheart, can I see your arm?”
Sophie hesitated.
Then she slowly pulled up her sleeve.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Three fading bruises marked her upper arm.
They were shaped like fingers.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“She bruises easily.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“You told me last week those marks came from the playground.”
“They did.”
“You just said she bruises easily.”
“Both can be true.”
Ethan stood.
Vanessa backed up.
“Ethan, you’re scaring me.”
“Good.”
Her eyes widened.
He reached into his jacket.
“I’ve spent the last four days investigating you.”
Vanessa’s face drained.
“What?”
“I found out more than you think.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Ethan removed his phone.
He placed it on the coffee table.
On the screen was an old photograph.
Vanessa stared at it.
A man beside a lake.
Dark hair.
Blue jacket.
Smiling.
Her first husband.
Daniel Cross.
Vanessa whispered, “Where did you get that?”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“From the detective who never believed Daniel’s death was an accident.”
The glass slipped from Vanessa’s hand.
It shattered on the marble.
Sophie screamed.
And Ethan realized something instantly.
Vanessa wasn’t shocked that he knew Daniel’s name.
She was terrified that someone had reopened the case.
Then Vanessa whispered the sentence Ethan would remember for the rest of his life.
“You should never have looked into that.”

And for the first time, Ethan understood.
His daughter wasn’t the only person Vanessa had hurt.
