Chapter 6 - THE ACCIDENT THAT NEVER HAPPENED

Arthur listened to the recording twice.
On the third time, he stopped it.
“What accident?”
Detective Warren’s face had gone hard.
“We need the full file.”
He played the rest.
Daniel spoke calmly.
Almost casually.
“Arthur drives that mountain road every Thursday. One brake line, one bad turn. Everybody calls it tragic.”
Elena’s voice followed.
“And Noah?”
“He inherits.”
“And then?”
“You’re his legal guardian.”
Arthur felt Maria grab the back of the seat.
Elena asked one final question.
“What about Maria?”
Daniel laughed.
“The nanny? Who’s going to believe her?”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Noah was in another room with a responding officer, thank God.
Arthur stared at the blank laptop screen.
His own wife had discussed his death like they were planning dinner.
Maria’s eyes filled.
“They were going to kill you.”
Arthur rubbed his face.
“No.”
Warren looked at him.
“You heard it.”
Arthur’s voice turned cold.
“They were going to kill me and use my son to collect the money.”
That distinction mattered.
It turned pain into rage.
Warren shut the laptop.
“This is enough for warrants.”
“Then get them.”
“We will.”
Arthur stood.
“I’m going to the airport.”
“You’re staying with your son.”
“Daniel has fourteen million dollars.”
“And he may be armed.”
Arthur looked at him.
“My company employs four hundred people. That reserve covers payroll, insurance, projects, families. This isn’t just my money.”
Warren stepped closer.
“And if you get shot, none of that matters.”
Maria spoke quietly.
“He’s right.”
Arthur looked at her.
She had blood dried along her cheek.
A woman earning a nanny’s salary had risked her life for his child while his own wife had betrayed him.
He hated the irony.
He hated himself for not seeing it sooner.
Arthur sat beside Noah when the boy returned.
“Are you mad at Mom?” Noah asked.
Arthur swallowed.
“I’m mad about some choices she made.”
“Is she bad?”
Arthur looked at Maria.
She didn’t answer for him.
Good.
Arthur chose his words carefully.
“People can do very bad things even if we love them.”
Noah stared at his shoes.
“Will she come back?”
Arthur didn’t know how to answer.
Warren’s phone rang.
He stepped outside.
Two minutes later, he returned.
“They found Elena.”
Arthur stood.
“At the airport?”
“No.”
“Where?”
“Your company headquarters.”
Arthur frowned.
“What?”
“She used her spouse access badge twenty minutes ago.”
Daniel too?
“No sign of him.”
Arthur’s phone buzzed.
Company security.
ALERT: FIRE SYSTEM ACTIVATED — FLOOR 27.
Arthur looked at Warren.
“My private office.”
They were burning the evidence.
Arthur grabbed his jacket.
This time Warren didn’t argue.
They raced downtown.
Smoke was pouring from the twenty-seventh floor when they arrived.
Employees crowded the sidewalk.
Firefighters rushed inside.
Arthur pushed through.
His head of security stopped him.
“Sir, you can’t go up.”
“Where’s Elena?”
“We saw her enter your office before the alarm.”
“Did she come out?”
The man hesitated.
“No.”
Arthur looked at the windows above.
One shattered.
Smoke rolled into the night.
Then his phone rang.
Elena.
He answered.
Her voice was breathless.
“Arthur.”
“Where are you?”
“Your office.”
“Get out now.”
“I can’t.”
Despite everything, his heart kicked against his ribs.
“Elena, listen to me. Get to the emergency stairs.”
She started crying.
“Daniel locked me in.”
Arthur froze.
“What?”
“He took the money. He took my passport. He said I was the loose end.”
A crash sounded behind her.
Elena screamed.
“Arthur, please!”
He looked up at the burning floor.
Then Elena said something that changed everything.
“He has Noah’s real trust documents.”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean, real?”
“The papers Maria found were only copies.”
“Where are the originals?”
“With Daniel.”
“Why does he need them?”
Elena started sobbing.
“Because if he gets Noah out of the country, he can take all twenty-two million.”
Arthur turned toward the police car.
Noah was supposed to be safe.
He called Maria.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
His chest tightened.
Then a text appeared from Maria’s phone.
A photograph.
Noah unconscious in the back seat of a car.
