Chapter 1 - THE PAPERS ON THE FLOOR

“ARTHUR, DON’T LET HER TOUCH YOUR SON!”

The scream ripped through the Vance mansion so violently that six-year-old Noah dropped his glass of milk.

It shattered across the marble floor.

Arthur Vance came running out of his study.

“What the hell is going on?”

Maria stood at the bottom of the staircase, pale and shaking, clutching a thick stack of legal documents against her chest.

Across from her, Elena Vance—Arthur’s wife—looked like she wanted to tear those papers apart with her bare hands.

“Elena?” Arthur snapped. “Why were you screaming?”

“She went through my private files!” Elena shouted, pointing at Maria. “Your nanny has been snooping around our bedroom!”

Maria shook her head.

“No, sir. I found these in Noah’s backpack.”

Arthur stopped.

“My son’s backpack?”

Noah stood frozen beside the kitchen doorway.

Elena’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But Arthur saw it.

Maria stepped forward.

“Mr. Vance, please read page seven.”

Elena rushed toward her.

“Give me those!”

Arthur moved between them.

“Back off.”

Elena stared at him.

“Arthur.”

“I said back off.”

Maria handed him the documents.

Arthur scanned the first page.

Then the second.

His expression hardened.

“What is this?”

“Nothing,” Elena said quickly. “Business paperwork.”

Arthur kept reading.

His eyes stopped on a line near the bottom.

BENEFICIARY: NOAH JAMES VANCE.

His stomach dropped.

This wasn’t ordinary paperwork.

This involved the inheritance trust Arthur’s father had created for Noah before he died.

Twenty-two million dollars.

Money nobody was supposed to touch until Noah turned twenty-five.

Arthur flipped another page.

Then another.

His hands began to shake.

“Elena…”

She crossed her arms.

“It’s complicated.”

“Why does this document authorize a transfer of eight million dollars from Noah’s trust?”

Maria whispered, “There’s more.”

Arthur looked at her.

She pointed to the last page.

Arthur read the signature.

ARTHUR MICHAEL VANCE.

His blood went cold.

“That’s not my signature.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Elena’s eyes widened.

“Arthur, I can explain.”

“You forged my name?”

“I did not forge anything.”

Maria stepped closer.

“Mr. Vance, the transfer is scheduled for tomorrow morning.”

Arthur looked at the timestamp.

9:00 A.M.

Less than sixteen hours away.

Elena suddenly grabbed Noah by the arm.

“Come with me.”

Noah cried out.

“Ow! Mom!”

Arthur’s voice exploded.

“TAKE YOUR HAND OFF HIM.”

Elena froze.

Arthur walked toward her slowly.

“Do not touch my son right now.”

“You’re choosing the nanny over your own wife?”

Arthur stared at her.

“No.”

His eyes dropped to the forged signature.

“I’m choosing the truth.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“You have no idea what’s really happening.”

Maria looked at Arthur.

“She was going to empty his trust.”

“That money belongs to our family!” Elena screamed.

Arthur’s face hardened.

“No. It belongs to Noah.”

Elena’s breathing changed.

Then she smiled.

It wasn’t fear.

It was confidence.

“You think those papers are the problem?”

Arthur narrowed his eyes.

Elena leaned close enough that only he and Maria could hear her.

“You should check your company account.”

Arthur pulled out his phone.

He opened the banking app.

May you like

And stared at the screen.

His main corporate account was missing fourteen million dollars.
