Chapter 14 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

The old Carter warehouse had been abandoned for years.
At least, that’s what Daniel believed.
But when he arrived, the lights were already on.
Someone was waiting.
Daniel parked the car.
Sarah grabbed his arm.
“Don’t go in alone.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I need answers.”
“We almost lost everything because people went after answers alone.”
Daniel looked back at Lily.
She was sleeping in the back seat.
For the first time in days, she looked peaceful.
“I promised her I would protect her.”
Sarah nodded.
“Then let me protect you too.”
They entered together.
The warehouse was empty.
Too empty.
Daniel walked slowly.
“Hello?”
A voice answered.
“You finally came.”
Daniel stopped.
A man stepped out from the shadows.
Older.
Gray hair.
Calm eyes.
Daniel stared.
Then his entire body froze.
“No…”
The man smiled.
“Hello, Daniel.”
Daniel couldn’t speak.
Because the man standing in front of him was impossible.
It was Thomas Carter.
His father.
Alive.
“You died.”
Thomas smiled.
“That’s what everyone needed to believe.”
Sarah stepped forward.
“You ruined countless lives.”
Thomas looked at her.
“And you almost destroyed everything I built.”
Daniel’s anger exploded.
“You used me.”
Thomas looked at him.
“I prepared you.”
“You lied to me.”
“I protected the family name.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You protected yourself.”
Thomas smiled sadly.
“You sound exactly like your mother.”
Daniel froze.
“My mother?”
Thomas walked around slowly.
“Your mother was smarter than you.”
Daniel’s fists tightened.
“She knew what you were doing.”
“Yes.”
“And she tried to stop you.”
“Yes.”
“What happened to her?”
Thomas looked away.
“She made a mistake.”
Sarah’s face turned pale.
Daniel understood.
“You killed her.”
Thomas said nothing.
But his silence answered.
Daniel felt rage burning inside him.
All the pain.
All the lies.
All the years stolen from his family.
Then Thomas said something unexpected.
“You think I’m the villain because you only know half the story.”
Daniel laughed.
“Half?”
Thomas pointed toward Lily.
“You don’t know who Lily really is.”
Daniel immediately stepped in front of her.
“Don’t say her name.”
Thomas smiled.
“She is connected to everything.”
Sarah shook her head.
“Stop.”
Thomas ignored her.
“Her birth family owned evidence that could destroy powerful people.”
Daniel stared.
“So you took her.”
Thomas shrugged.
“I protected my interests.”
Daniel looked at him with disgust.
“No.”
His voice became steady.
“You destroyed innocent people.”
Thomas smiled.
“And now you will make the same choice.”
“What choice?”
Thomas pressed a button.
The warehouse doors closed.
A screen turned on.
A countdown appeared.
10:00.
Daniel looked around.
“What did you do?”
Thomas smiled.
“I created a final test.”
Sarah grabbed Lily.
Daniel looked at the countdown.
“What happens at zero?”
Thomas walked away.
“You lose everything.”
The timer continued.
09:45.
09:44.
Daniel looked around the warehouse.
Then he noticed something.
A small camera in the corner.
Recording.
He smiled.
Because Thomas made the same mistake everyone else made.
They thought Daniel was only fighting.
They forgot he was collecting evidence.
Daniel looked at Sarah.
“Keep Lily safe.”
Then he looked directly at the camera.
“Dad.”
The timer continued.
09:20.
“I know you’re watching.”
A pause.
“You wanted to see if I would become like you.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“But you forgot one thing.”
The camera zoomed.
Daniel smiled.
“I’m not protecting your empire.”
“I’m ending it.”
The countdown stopped.
For one second.
Then the warehouse lights turned red.
And Thomas’ voice came through the speakers.
“You really think you won?”
A door opened behind Daniel.
Someone walked out.
Someone carrying a folder.
Someone who made Sarah gasp.
Because she recognized him.
The last person connected to Thomas Carter.
May you like
The person who knew where every secret was buried.
