Chapter 6 - A NAME IN THE HALLWAY

Detective Ortiz chased the woman into the hallway. Victoria stayed with Nora, who was clutching her wrist.
“Did you recognize her?” Victoria asked.
“She was outside my room yesterday. She said she was visiting another resident.”
Footsteps pounded down the corridor. A door slammed. Minutes later, Ortiz returned, breathing hard.
“She got into a car. We have cameras on the lot and her description.”
Nora pressed something into Victoria’s hand: a small photograph, creased through the middle. In it, Richard Hale stood beside Daniel Cross at a fundraising dinner. Between them was a third man Victoria had never seen.
“His name is Peter Vale,” Nora said. “He managed Richard’s private accounts. Caroline knew where he put the money.”
Ortiz took a photograph of the print. “Where is he now?”
“That’s what Evan came to ask me.”
On the way out, Victoria called the hotel. Emma was safe. An officer had moved her to a private suite after a man claiming to be her uncle tried to ask the front desk for her room number.
Victoria’s pulse jumped. “Did they get his name?”
“He wouldn’t give one,” the officer said.
Twenty minutes later, Victoria reached the hotel. Emma stood as soon as she entered.
“Did you find Mom?”
“Not yet.” Victoria sat beside her. “I found someone who knew her when she was young.”
Emma studied Victoria’s face. “You’re sad.”
“I’m angry at people who hurt her.”
“That’s okay,” Emma said. “Mom gets angry, too.”
Victoria almost smiled. Then Emma reached into her pocket.
“I forgot this was there.”
It was a folded receipt from a pharmacy in Hoboken. Caroline had written two words across the top:
Ask Peter.
The receipt was dated that morning. On its reverse, in smaller writing, was a street address.
Ortiz checked it against public records. Peter Vale owned the building.
Before they could leave, Victoria received a photograph on her phone. Caroline sat in a chair in an unfamiliar room, eyes open, a fresh bruise on her cheek.
