Chapter 14 - THE SIGNATURE

“I didn’t sign these,” Victoria said.
Ortiz nodded. “We believe you. Daniel had access to your electronic signature through the firm.”
The account had financed property purchases under Victoria’s name. Peter and Daniel had taken the profits while the records made it look as though she controlled the deals.
“They planned to blame you if anyone found the files,” Caroline said.
Victoria thought of every document Daniel had brought to her office, every time he had said, “I’ll handle it.”
“Can we prove the signatures were copied?” she asked.
Ortiz showed her a transfer authorization dated the day Victoria had been in surgery, under anesthesia. A second was dated during a flight when she had no internet access. Caroline’s files included emails in which Daniel instructed Peter to use Victoria’s name.
“That’s why Daniel wanted you close,” Ortiz said. “Your trust made his paperwork easier.”
By midnight, Victoria had given investigators access to her business records. She also called her company’s board and told them what had happened before rumors could turn into a story of their own making.
The next morning, she visited Emma and Caroline in a protected apartment arranged by the police. Emma sat cross-legged on the rug, drawing three women beneath a huge green tree.
“Is that us?” Victoria asked.
Emma nodded. “I made the tree because Mom says our necklaces look like leaves.”
Caroline came out of the kitchen with three mugs of cocoa.
For a few quiet minutes, they sat together.
Then Victoria said, “I’m going to sell the properties Dad left me. Anything made from those deals should go back to the people he pushed out.”
Caroline studied her. “That could take years.”
“I know.”
Emma looked up from her drawing. “Are you going away for years?”
Victoria sat beside her. “No, sweetheart. I’m staying.”
Emma moved closer until their shoulders touched.

Caroline’s phone rang. It was Ortiz. She had news about the car recovered from the Hudson eighteen years earlier.
The police had finally identified who had been inside it.
