Chapter 11 - SIX MINUTES

The voicemail lasted thirty-one seconds.

Ryan sounded breathless.

“We wrecked. She's out. Listen to me. Get the blue folder from the office before anybody goes in there. The one with the vendor statements. Don't call me back.”

He didn't say Emily's name.

He didn't ask Vanessa to pray.

He asked her to hide the paperwork.

Records placed that call six minutes before his call to emergency services. Investigators would examine the timing and circumstances. Ortiz warned us against turning six minutes into a medical conclusion no doctor had made.

But I couldn't stop imagining them.

Six minutes was enough time to make toast. To find a child's missing shoe. To stand beside someone you had promised to love and decide the money came first.

Emily listened once.

“Turn it off,” she said.

I did.

The blue folder was gone. Vanessa admitted burning it at Ryan's request. Her attorney sat beside her while she explained where, when, and what she had seen inside.

It wasn't innocence. It was cooperation after the doors started closing.

Beth's saved records filled in some of what the fire had taken. Investigators obtained more through the banks. Payments to Price began shortly after Emily moved to Cedar House.

By Thursday, Price had resigned. By Friday, he had an attorney.

Meanwhile, Ryan's lawyer filed papers describing me as violent and Emily as medically incapable of parenting.

Attached was a photograph of Lily crying against my chest at the wedding.

The caption made it sound as if I had caused her fear.

I stared at it until Dana took it away.

“That's what he does,” I said.

“Then don't help him do it. No calls. No messages. Nothing you wouldn't want read aloud.”

That night, Lily asked whether the judge could make her live with Daddy.

“The adults are working to keep you safe,” I told her.

“That's not what I asked.”

Seven years old, and already she knew when an answer stepped around the truth.

“I can't promise what someone else will decide,” I said. “I can promise we won't stop telling them what happened.”

She nodded, then pulled the blanket to her chin.

At dawn, Dana called.

Ryan wanted a deal. He would stop fighting the placement and return some of the money.

In exchange, Emily had to sign a statement saying he had never deliberately kept her from her family.
