Chapter 6: The Report

Chapter 6: The Report
I called child protective services from the backyard.
Clara stood at the kitchen window watching me.
I reported the bruises, the hidden tapes, Harper’s fear, and the statement about fire.
The caseworker told me not to confront Clara further and not to remove Harper unless there was immediate danger.
I almost laughed.
Immediate danger was standing ten yards away in a cream blouse, making tea.
The sheriff’s deputy arrived first.
Her name was Maria Ruiz.
She photographed Harper’s bruises while a child-services investigator named Kelly Grant interviewed her in the living room.
Clara cried beautifully.
She didn’t sob.
She let tears gather and fall one at a time.
“I knew Ethan was having difficulty adjusting,” she told Ruiz. “But I never imagined he would accuse me of this.”
Ruiz looked at the red mark on my cheek.
“Did your wife strike you?”
Clara answered before I could.
“He frightened me.”
Harper sat on the couch clutching Scout.
Kelly asked, “Did your mother hurt your arm?”
Harper looked at Clara.
Clara lowered her face, appearing devastated.
Harper whispered, “No.”
Clara’s shoulders collapsed in relief.
Then Harper added, “It was the punishment hand.”
Nobody moved.
Kelly leaned closer.
“What is the punishment hand?”
Harper held up her own fingers and curled them around her upper arm.
“Mommy says one hand is for loving and one hand is for teaching.”
Clara’s tears stopped.
Kelly asked, “Which hand made the bruises?”
Harper pointed to Clara’s right hand.
Clara stood.
“This is absurd.”
Deputy Ruiz stepped between them.
“Please sit down.”
“She’s confused!”
Harper flinched at the raised voice.
Clara saw it and lowered her tone instantly.
“Sweetheart, tell them what really happened.”
Kelly turned sharply.
“Mrs. Monroe, do not coach her.”
“I’m her mother.”
“And this is now an active child-abuse investigation.”
Clara stared at me.
Hatred settled over her face.
Ruiz escorted her into the kitchen.
Kelly asked Harper whether she felt safe staying in the house.
Harper shook her head.
“Where would you feel safe?”
She looked at me.
“With Daddy Ethan.”
It was the first time she had called me that.
My throat tightened.
But before I could answer, Clara shouted from the kitchen.
“He is not her father!”
Harper buried her face in Scout.
I crossed the room and knelt beside her.
May you like
“No,” I said quietly. “But I’m here.”
And this time, she believed me.
