Chapter 1: The Handprint

Chapter 1: The Handprint

I had seen hundreds of bruises in the emergency room.

Some came from car crashes. Some from falls. Some from fists.

The marks on Harper’s arm came from fingers.

I kept my expression calm, even though every muscle in my body had tightened.

“Harper,” I said softly, “how did this happen?”

Her face lost all color.

She yanked her sleeve down and backed away from me.

“I fell.”

There was no hesitation in her answer.

That scared me more than the bruises.

Seven-year-olds stumbled through lies. They looked for words. They changed details.

Harper delivered hers like she had practiced it.

“Where did you fall?”

Her eyes moved toward the staircase.

Then toward the front door.

Then back to me.

“I don’t remember.”

The front lock clicked.

Harper froze.

Clara stepped inside carrying a leather overnight bag.

She wasn’t supposed to be home until that evening.

Her gaze moved from me to Harper, then to Harper’s sweater sleeve.

“What are you two doing?” she asked.

The question sounded casual.

Her eyes did not.

“I was helping her get ready,” I said.

Clara smiled.

“Harper can dress herself.”

She crossed the room and placed a hand on her daughter’s shoulder.

Harper flinched.

It was small.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

Clara saw me see it.

For one silent second, the polished mask slipped.

Something cold stared back at me.

Then she smiled again.

“Go get your backpack, sweetheart.”

Harper hurried away.

Clara waited until we were alone.

“You shouldn’t examine her like one of your patients,” she said.

“I wasn’t examining her.”

“You rolled up her sleeve.”

“I was helping her.”

Clara stepped closer.

“My daughter is sensitive, Ethan. She invents things when she feels threatened.”

“Has she invented bruises before?”

The smile disappeared.

Clara’s voice dropped.

“Be careful.”

“With what?”

“With convincing yourself that your medical training makes you understand my child better than I do.”

From the hallway, I heard Harper’s backpack zipper close.

Clara’s smile returned before Harper entered the room.

That was when I understood.

Harper wasn’t afraid that I would leave.

She was afraid I would discover the truth—

and leave her behind.
