CHAPTER 1 — THE WEDDING THAT STOPPED IN SILENCE

The wedding bells were still ringing when everything fell apart.

Emily Carter stood beneath the white flowers of St. Gabriel Chapel, holding Ethan’s hands as tears of happiness filled her eyes.

After years of struggling, after losing her parents at a young age and building her life alone, she finally believed she had found a family.

Ethan was the man who made her feel safe.

“I promise I’ll protect you for the rest of my life,” Ethan whispered.

Emily smiled.

“I believe you.”

The priest opened his mouth to continue the ceremony.

But before he could speak, a loud voice interrupted.

“STOP THIS WEDDING.”

Every person in the chapel turned.

Margaret Williams, Ethan’s mother, walked toward the altar.

Her expression was cold.

Confused.

Almost afraid.

“Mom?” Ethan frowned. “What are you doing?”

Margaret ignored him.

Her eyes were locked on Emily.

“You need to tell me where you got that necklace.”

Emily touched the silver butterfly pendant around her neck.

“This? It belonged to my mother.”

Margaret’s face suddenly changed.

“No
”

She stepped closer.

“No, that’s impossible.”

Emily took a step back.

“What are you talking about?”

Instead of answering, Margaret grabbed the edge of Emily’s wedding dress.

“What are you doing?” Ethan shouted.

But Margaret pulled.

The sound of tearing fabric echoed through the chapel.

Guests gasped.

Emily covered herself in shock.

Then everyone saw it.

A small butterfly-shaped birthmark beneath her shoulder.

Margaret stopped breathing.

Her anger disappeared.

Her face turned pale.

Because she had seen that mark once before.

Thirty years ago.

On a tiny baby girl she thought she had lost forever.

Slowly, Margaret touched the silver butterfly pendant.

Her hands trembled.

“My
”

Her voice broke.

“My daughter
”

The chapel went completely silent.

Emily stared at her.

“What did you just call me?”

Margaret began crying.

“Because you are not just Ethan’s fiancĂ©e
”

She looked at Emily with disbelief.

“You are my missing child.”

Nobody moved.

May you like

And Ethan’s wedding day became the day his entire family’s secret was exposed.
