Chapter 12 — Beneath the House

Chapter 12 — Beneath the House

The mansion had been built in 1928.

Its original blueprints showed a wine cellar beneath the east wing.

The newer plans did not.

Samuel found the sealed entrance behind a paneled wall in the library.

Police entered first.

The air below was cold and stale.

Emma remained upstairs while cameras transmitted the search.

Inside the hidden room were dozens of boxes, a metal desk, and a large safe.

The safe contained records dating back thirty years.

Not family photographs.

Evidence.

Ryan’s grandfather, Henry Carter, had spent years documenting financial crimes committed by his own son—Victoria’s late husband, Charles.

Bribery.

Tax fraud.

Illegal property deals.

Payments to public officials.

Samuel read the files in silence.

Ryan stared at his father’s signature on every page.

“My father built the company through crime.”

Samuel nodded.

“Your grandfather discovered it too late. He began preserving evidence.”

“Why didn’t he go to the authorities?”

“He feared the company would collapse and thousands of employees would lose their jobs.”

Emma looked at the boxes through the video monitor.

“So he sold me the house to keep Victoria from finding the room.”

Samuel nodded.

“He trusted you because you had already refused to falsify an architectural report for the company.”

Emma remembered.

Three years earlier, Victoria had pressured her to approve renovation work that violated safety codes. Emma had refused, even after Ryan begged her to “keep peace in the family.”

Henry had called her the next day.

He had said, A person who says no when it costs them something is a person worth trusting.

Now she understood.

Ryan sat heavily in a chair.

“My entire family was built on lies.”

Emma looked at him.

“Not your entire family.”

He glanced at her belly.

Pain crossed his face.

The hidden archive also contained a letter addressed to Emma.

Samuel opened it with her permission.

Dear Emma,

If you are reading this, Victoria has finally learned the house is yours. I am sorry for the burden I placed upon you. But I believed the truth would be safer with someone who valued people more than a family name.

Ryan is not cruel by nature. But weakness can become cruelty when it repeatedly protects the wrong person. Do not save him from the consequences of his choices. Only then may he become the man he should have been.

Emma stopped reading.

Ryan lowered his head.

The final paragraph revealed that Henry had created a second trust.

It controlled a large portion of the Carter Group.

The beneficiary was not Ryan.

It was Ryan’s first legitimate child.

Emma’s unborn daughter.

Victoria had known.

That was why she wanted control of the baby.

Not because she loved her.

Because the child would inherit the power Victoria had spent her life chasing.

Samuel looked at Emma.

“Your daughter will control thirty-eight percent of the company when she turns twenty-five.”

Ryan whispered, “My mother knew all along.”

Emma’s phone rang.

It was Victoria.

This time, Emma answered.

Victoria did not sound angry.

She sounded calm.

“You found the room.”

“Yes.”

“Then you finally understand why that child belongs with me.”

Emma’s voice turned cold.

“She will never belong to you.”

Victoria laughed softly.

“We’ll see.”

A nurse entered suddenly, pushing a wheelchair.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to move you.”

Emma frowned.

“Why?”

The nurse smiled.

“Doctor’s orders.”

Samuel looked at the badge.

The photograph did not match the woman’s face.

May you like

He shouted for security.

The fake nurse pulled a syringe from her pocket.
