Chapter 1 — The Smile That Disappeared

Chapter 1 — The Smile That Disappeared
For three full seconds, nobody moved.
Rain tapped against the marble steps. Water dripped from the ends of Emma’s chestnut hair and ran down the sleeves of her cream cardigan. At her feet, tiny baby clothes lay scattered across the driveway like pieces of a life Victoria Carter had tried to throw away.
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“What did you say?”
Emma placed the wet baby sock inside her suitcase and slowly stood.
“I said the house is legally mine.”
Claire gave a short laugh from behind the glass doors.
“That’s pathetic,” she said. “You’re standing in the rain, pregnant and homeless, and you’re still pretending to have power.”
Emma looked past her.
Ryan stood beside Claire, pale and silent.
He had heard every word.
He still said nothing.
Victoria stepped down one marble stair, gripping the railing.
“This estate has belonged to the Carter family for forty years.”
“No,” Emma said. “The Carter family lived here for forty years. That isn’t the same thing.”
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
“My late husband bought this property.”
“And your late father-in-law sold it.”
The words landed harder than a scream.
Ryan finally moved.
“What are you talking about?”
Emma looked at him for the first time.
Three hours earlier, she had still believed they were married.
Now he stood inside her house with another woman’s hand resting on his arm.
“I’m talking about the deed you never bothered to read.”
Victoria’s confidence flickered, but she quickly recovered.
“You’re lying.”
Emma reached into her handbag and removed her phone.
She tapped the screen once.
“I’ve just informed my attorney that unauthorized occupants have locked me out of my property.”
Victoria’s lips parted.
Claire pulled her hand away from Ryan.
“You wouldn’t dare,” Victoria whispered.
Emma calmly placed the phone back in her bag.
“You threatened to have me arrested for trespassing.”
She looked toward the glowing windows of the mansion.
“So I thought we should let the police decide who belongs here.”
In the distance, faint sirens rose above the rain.
Victoria turned toward the security gate.
For the first time that afternoon, fear appeared in her eyes.
And Emma realized something important.
Victoria had never expected resistance.

She had mistaken kindness for weakness.
That mistake was about to cost her everything.
