PART 2 — The Bill That Destroyed Diego’s Perfect Illusion

The silence after Sofía’s words was heavier than any scream.

For ten seconds, nobody moved.

The guests who had laughed moments earlier now stared at their plates, unable to look at the two little girls covered in food.

Doña Amparo was the first to break the silence.

She laughed.

A cold, uncomfortable laugh.

“Look at you,” she said, pointing at Sofía. “Finally showing your true colors. You think walking away dramatically makes you important?”

Sofía said nothing.

She simply cleaned the last bit of soup from Camila’s dress.

That calmness irritated Doña Amparo more than anger would have.

“You have always been like this,” the older woman continued. “Pretending to be better than everyone while my son is the one who built this family’s future.”

Several guests nodded.

They still believed Diego’s story.

They still believed the mansion belonged to him.

They still believed Sofía was just the quiet wife standing behind a successful husband.

Until Diego’s phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The sound echoed through the room.

Diego looked at the screen.

His smile disappeared.

It was the catering company.

He ignored it.

But seconds later, the call came again.

Everyone noticed.

“Answer it,” Sofía said softly.

Diego looked at her.

There was something different in her voice.

Something he had never heard before.

Confidence.

“What are you doing?” he whispered.

“Nothing,” Sofía replied. “I just think you should answer your bill.”

A few guests exchanged confused looks.

Diego stepped away from the table and answered.

“Hello?”

The color slowly drained from his face.

“What do you mean the payment failed?”

The room became silent.

He turned his back, trying to hide his panic.

“No, no. That’s impossible. The money is coming.”

A pause.

Then his expression changed.

The catering company had not called to remind him.

They had called because the payment deadline had arrived.

The $300,000 bill.

The bill he signed.

The bill he promised to pay.

The bill that was now legally his responsibility.

When Diego returned, he tried to act normal.

“Small problem,” he said, forcing a smile.

Doña Amparo immediately defended him.

“Of course there is a problem. These companies always try to pressure successful people.”

But Sofía reached into her handbag.

And placed a document on the table.

The room froze.

The paper landed beside Diego’s tequila glass.

“Do you recognize this?” Sofía asked.

Diego looked down.

His face changed.

Everyone saw it.

The fear.

The confusion.

The realization.

It was the promissory note.

His signature was clearly visible.

$300,000.

Due immediately.

“What is this?” one guest asked.

Sofía looked around the room.

For ten years, she had remained silent.

Tonight, she finally spoke.

“This is the money my husband borrowed to create this fantasy.”

Nobody breathed.

“The mansion is rented.”

Whispers exploded across the room.

“The cars outside are borrowed.”

More whispers.

“The jewelry, the decorations, this entire celebration…”

She looked directly at Diego.

“Everything was purchased to make strangers believe he was someone he is not.”

Diego’s face turned red.

“You planned this?”

Sofía looked at him.

“No.”

May you like

A pause.

“I simply stopped protecting your lies.”
