At the hospital, doctors asked questions.
Too many questions.
How did Emily get injured?
Why was she afraid?
Why did she avoid answering?
Michael sat beside her bed.
For the first time in fourteen months, he held his wife’s hand.
And he realized something painful.
He had come home expecting to save Emily.
But Emily had been surviving alone.
The doctor quietly told Michael:
“Your wife has signs of prolonged emotional stress.”
Michael looked down.
His fists tightened.
Then the doctor added:
“She also has an old injury that was never treated.”
Michael looked up.
“What injury?”
The doctor showed him the report.
Emily had fallen down the stairs three months earlier.
But Michael knew.
That wasn’t an accident.
