Michael spent the entire night reading his own letters.
Every page destroyed another lie.
In every letter, he wrote about Emily.
Their future.
Their children.
Their home.
But Emily never received any of it.
Instead, Margaret had convinced her son’s wife that Michael was changing.
That the military had made him distant.
That maybe he would never come back.
Emily revealed the truth.
“She told me you asked for space.”
Michael looked shocked.
“I never said that.”
“She showed me a message.”
“What message?”
Emily hesitated.
Then she opened her phone.
Michael saw the text.
A message from his number.
But he knew instantly.
It wasn’t him.
Someone had copied his account.
Someone had destroyed their marriage from inside their own home.
Michael looked toward his mother.
Margaret finally admitted it.
“I was protecting you.”
Michael laughed bitterly.
“Protecting me?”
“You were leaving your family behind.”
“I was serving my country.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“And Emily was not good enough for you.”
The words froze the room.
Michael realized the truth.
His mother never wanted to protect him.
She wanted control.
