Chapter 3 - MY HUSBAND’S SILENCE

Daniel looked trapped.

For once, nobody was yelling.

That made it worse.

Frank waited.

“What did she tell you?”

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

“Dad, this isn’t—”

“Answer me.”

Evelyn cut in.

“I told him Rachel stole money.”

Frank’s eyes stayed on Daniel.

“When?”

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“When?” Frank repeated.

“This afternoon.”

I frowned.

“This afternoon?”

Evelyn had accused me of stealing money from her bedroom tonight.

At dinner.

But she had told Daniel hours earlier.

Before I even arrived at the house.

I felt my stomach turn.

“When exactly?” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“Maybe three.”

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“At three, I was at work.”

Nobody spoke.

I pulled my phone up.

“My office security system shows me entering at eight twelve this morning and leaving at five forty.”

Evelyn waved her hands.

“You could’ve stolen it yesterday.”

“You told Daniel you caught me red-handed.”

“I meant—”

“No. You wanted a public scene.”

“I wanted my money back!”

“What money?”

Her mouth snapped shut.

I stepped toward her.

“You never lost five hundred dollars, did you?”

“You don’t know that.”

“Then call the police.”

That shut her up.

Linda looked between us.

“Actually, yes. Call them.”

Evelyn spun around.

“This is a family matter.”

“No,” I said. “You accused me of theft and assaulted me. Let’s call the police.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Rachel, don’t.”

I looked at him.

“Why not?”

“Because you’re angry.”

“My mouth is bleeding.”

“We can deal with this privately.”

“You had a chance to deal with it privately when your mother had me by the hair.”

His eyes flashed.

“Stop saying it like that.”

I stared at him.

“Like what? Accurately?”

Eric muttered, “Damn.”

Daniel glared at him.

“Stay out of this.”

Eric stood.

“No. You stay out of telling people to shut up. She’s right.”

“Don’t start.”

“I watched Mom hit your wife while you stood there.”

Daniel’s face went red.

Evelyn pointed at Eric.

“Do not disrespect your brother.”

Eric laughed.

“Of course. Protect Daniel. That’s new.”

Something shifted in the room.

There were old wounds here.

Older than me.

Frank sat down slowly.

I noticed his hands shaking.

“How much money?” he asked again.

Evelyn looked away.

Frank’s voice broke.

“How much did you move?”

Nobody answered.

So I did.

“Twenty thousand that I heard.”

Frank’s head snapped toward me.

“Twenty?”

“That’s what she said yesterday.”

“That’s not possible.”

Evelyn whispered, “Frank…”

He looked at her.

“Our emergency fund has twenty-eight thousand dollars.”

Her face went blank.

And suddenly I knew.

He knew exactly which account she had touched.

Frank reached for his phone.

Evelyn moved fast.

She slapped it out of his hand.

It hit the floor.

“Don’t.”

Frank stared at her.

“Why?”

She backed up.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

She didn’t.

Instead, she looked at Daniel.

“Tell him.”

Daniel froze.

My skin went cold.

Frank followed her eyes.

“Tell me what?”

May you like

Daniel looked down.

And that was the second I realized my husband had known much more than I thought.
