Chapter 1 - SHE DRAGGED ME ACROSS THE FLOOR

The first thing I heard was my own hair tearing.
Then my knees hit the kitchen tile.
Hard.
“THIEF!”
My mother-in-law’s voice exploded through the house while her fist stayed wrapped around my hair.
For half a second, I couldn’t even breathe.
Then she dragged me.
Right across the wet kitchen floor.
In front of eleven people.
My husband included.
“Evelyn!” somebody shouted.
But nobody moved.
Not even Daniel.
Especially not Daniel.
Soapy water soaked the front of my jeans. My palms scraped across the tile as I tried to catch myself.
Evelyn yanked my head back.
“You thought you could steal from me and smile in my face?”
“I didn’t steal anything!”
She slapped me.
The sound cracked through the kitchen.
Nobody spoke.
My ears rang.
I tasted blood.
Then I looked at my husband.
Daniel stood beside the dining table with his arms folded.
His jaw was tight.
His eyes met mine for one second.
Then he looked away.
That hurt worse than the slap.
“She took five hundred dollars from my bedroom,” Evelyn said. “I left it in an envelope. It’s gone.”
Her sister Linda gasped.
Daniel’s younger brother, Eric, frowned at me.
Grandma Rose covered her mouth.
Evelyn looked around the room like she was performing on a stage.
“I welcomed this woman into my family.”
“You never welcomed me,” I said.
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Because she knew exactly what I knew.
Yesterday, I had walked into the laundry room looking for detergent.
I had heard her voice through the half-open back door.
Low.
Nervous.
Talking to a man.
Not her husband.
And what she said had nothing to do with five hundred dollars.
It had to do with twenty thousand.
A bank account.
A hotel.
And leaving her husband.
Evelyn wasn’t attacking me because she thought I was a thief.
She was attacking me because she needed everyone else to think I was one.
“Admit it,” she said.
“No.”
She raised her hand again.
This time, I caught her wrist.
The whole room froze.
Her eyes widened.
“You don’t touch me again,” I said.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Rachel. Let go of my mom.”
I stared at him.
Not, “Mom, stop.”
Not, “What are you doing?”
Not even, “Are you okay?”
Just—
Let go of my mom.
Something inside me went cold.
I released Evelyn.
Slowly.
Then I stood.
Blood ran down my lower lip.
My knees shook, but I smiled.
Evelyn blinked.
“What’s funny?”
“You.”
Her face went red.
I reached into my back pocket.
Daniel’s expression changed the second he saw my phone.
“Rachel,” he warned.
I ignored him.
“You wanted a trial in front of the whole family?”
I unlocked my screen.
“Fine.”
Evelyn went pale.
I held up my phone.
“Let’s have one.”
May you like
And when I pressed play, a man’s voice came through the speaker.
A voice Evelyn’s husband recognized immediately.
