Chapter 11: The Child They Kept

No one moved.

Not even the federal agents.

The words glowing across the monitor seemed louder than the gunshots that had echoed through the underground facility only seconds earlier.

PROJECT LIAM.

Created twenty-nine years ago.

My birth records.

My DNA profile.

And one handwritten sentence from Eleanor Collins.

David must never know which child we kept.

I stared at the screen.

My father was still kneeling beside Chloe.

Blood soaked through her jacket.

His hands pressed against the wound, refusing to let her slip away.

He looked older than I remembered.

Not because of the gray in his hair.

Because guilt had aged him far more than time ever could.

"David..."

His voice shook.

"I'm sorry."

I wanted answers.

Instead, the only words that came out were:

"Who am I?"

Nobody answered.

Gregory Vale slowly lowered his head.

Detective Morris looked from the screen to Gregory.

"Answer him."

Gregory closed his eyes.

"You deserve the truth."

"I've deserved it for twenty-nine years."

"The report isn't lying."

A ringing filled my ears.

"My biological father..."

"...is you?"

Gregory nodded once.

My knees almost gave out.

"No."

"You manipulated the records."

"You manipulate everything."

"This isn't another trick."

"It is."

"It has to be."

Daniel finally spoke.

"I raised you."

"I loved you."

"I am your father in every way that matters."

"But not by blood."

Every memory of my childhood collided at once.

My father teaching me to ride a bicycle.

Helping with homework.

Teaching me how to repair engines.

Standing beside me at my college graduation.

Blood suddenly felt meaningless.

Until I remembered Eleanor's note.

...which child we kept.

"Which child?"

I looked at Gregory.

"What child?"

He swallowed.

"When Eleanor became pregnant..."

"...she was carrying twins."

The room fell silent again.

"I only remember being an only child."

"Because you were raised as one."

"What happened?"

Gregory's voice became barely audible.

"One baby was officially registered."

"The other disappeared."

I stared at him.

"My twin?"

"Yes."

Maya's hand found mine.

Neither of us noticed when she had entered the underground room with two federal agents.

She had refused to remain upstairs.

Liam was safe under heavy protection.

Rose was beside him.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"You have a brother."

"I don't know."

"I don't know anything anymore."

Daniel carefully laid Chloe onto a stretcher as paramedics rushed toward her.

She was still breathing.

Barely.

Federal agents surrounded Eleanor.

She remained astonishingly calm.

"You all look so disappointed."

She smiled.

"As though biology suddenly changed who raised him."

Detective Morris stepped toward her.

"Where is the second child?"

Eleanor laughed.

"Which one?"

"The twin."

"You've spent decades hiding him."

"Him?"

She smiled wider.

"What makes you think it was a boy?"

Gregory looked horrified.

"You told me..."

"I told you many things."

"Most of them worked."

Morris tightened the handcuffs.

"This isn't a game."

"It never was."

She leaned toward him.

"You've only uncovered one archive."

The words froze everyone.

"One archive?"

"There are three."

My heart sank.

The underground facility.

Unit 317.

And...

"Where are the others?"

Eleanor looked directly at me.

"You've already been inside one."

Confusion swept through the room.

She enjoyed watching it happen.

"The Collins Foundation children's hospital."

My stomach turned.

The hospital.

Where Liam had nearly been poisoned.

Where Maya recovered.

Where newborns slept only floors above us.

"It isn't just a hospital."

"It's the first archive."

Detective Morris immediately radioed headquarters.

"Lock down every basement level."

"No one enters or leaves."

Agents sprinted upstairs.

Eleanor continued smiling.

"You'll be too late."

"What have you done?"

"I never destroy evidence."

"I relocate it."

One of the federal analysts suddenly shouted from the server room.

"Sir!"

Everyone turned.

More files had begun decrypting automatically.

Thousands of names streamed across the monitors.

Missing children.

Adoptive families.

Payments.

Medical records.

DNA comparisons.

Then another folder appeared.

PROJECT MIRROR.

"What is Project Mirror?"

The analyst opened it.

Rows of photographs filled the screen.

Children.

Teenagers.

Adults.

Each one paired beside another face.

They looked almost identical.

Different names.

Different families.

Same DNA.

Maya whispered.

"They cloned identities."

The analyst shook his head.

"No."

"Worse."

"They deliberately placed biological relatives into separate families."

"So they could inherit twice."

"So they could claim estates."

"So they could replace each other."

Gregory closed his eyes.

"I warned Daniel this would happen."

Daniel looked at him.

"You helped build it."

"I tried to stop it."

"You stopped when it threatened your son."

Gregory had no answer.

A young FBI analyst suddenly gasped.

"Oh my God."

"What?"

He enlarged one photograph.

My face.

Age twenty-eight.

Beside another man.

Same eyes.

Same jawline.

Same scar beneath the chin.

The caption read:

Subject D-2

Location:

Unknown.

Status:

Active.

My twin.

Alive.

Someone in the room whispered,

"He looks exactly like David."

Eleanor spoke quietly.

"He should."

"He wore your name for years."

My pulse hammered.

"What?"

"Whenever someone needed David Collins..."

"...we simply chose the other one."

I could barely breathe.

Every overseas signature.

Every financial transfer.

Every forged appearance.

Every witness statement.

Someone else could have been pretending to be me.

Not with forged documents.

With my own face.

Detective Morris slowly turned toward Eleanor.

"Where is he?"

She tilted her head.

"I haven't seen him in years."

No one believed her.

Another analyst interrupted.

"We have GPS metadata."

"From the photograph."

"Can you trace it?"

"Yes."

The map loaded.

Everyone leaned forward.

The blinking marker appeared.

Not another state.

Not another country.

Less than five miles away.

Directly beneath...

...the abandoned Collins family mansion.

The house where Eleanor had lived for the past twenty years.

The same house my attorney had ordered secured only hours earlier.

Detective Morris immediately barked new orders.

"Seal the property."

"No one goes inside without tactical support."

But another agent interrupted.

"Too late."

Everyone looked up.

"Security just reported movement."

"Several vehicles left the mansion ten minutes ago."

"Destination unknown."

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

Static.

Then breathing.

Finally...

...my own voice.

Not similar.

Not close.

Identical.

"Hello, David."

A chill ran through my entire body.

"I've been waiting a long time to meet my brother."

The call disconnected.

Across the underground command center, every screen suddenly went black.

One sentence appeared in white letters.

May you like

THE WRONG SON SURVIVED.
