My Mother Faked My Father's Death... Then I Discovered the Twin Brother She Stole From Me

My wife had survived an emergency C-section just eleven days earlier.

When I came home unannounced on New Year's Eve, I found her starving in a freezing apartment while our newborn cried from the cold.

An hour later, I checked the security cameras.

By sunrise, I was filing a police report against my own family.

"Where are my wife and son?"

The question echoed through the apartment as I unlocked the front door.

The only answer was the weak cry of a newborn coming from the kitchen.

It was 11:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

Everyone thought I was still in Stuttgart, Germany, inspecting industrial equipment until the first week of January.

Instead, I had paid a ridiculous amount for a last-minute flight back to New York without telling anyone.

I wanted to surprise my wife, Maya.

She had undergone an emergency C-section eleven days earlier.

I had never even held our son, Liam.

My suitcase was filled with gifts.

Thermal baby clothes.

Recovery supplies for Maya.

Chocolates for my mother.

An expensive perfume for my sister, Chloe.

I still believed they deserved them.

The apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn was ice cold.

The lights were off.

There wasn't a single sign of New Year's Eve.

No dinner.

No decorations.

No celebration.

The living room was littered with dirty diapers, empty glasses, and an opened container of cheap formula.

Then I walked into the kitchen.

My heart stopped.

Maya sat on a hard plastic folding chair.

She wore thin pajamas beneath an old cardigan.

Her face was pale.

Her lips were cracked.

One trembling hand pressed against her C-section incision.

Fresh blood had soaked through her sweater.

In front of her sat a plastic cup of instant ramen that had long since turned cold.

Beside her, baby Liam cried quietly inside a wicker bassinet, wrapped in a blanket far too thin for a freezing December night.

"David..."

Her eyes widened in disbelief.

"Why are you home?"

She tried to stand.

"I'll make you something to eat..."

Her knees gave out.

I caught her before she hit the hardwood floor.

"Where's my mother?"

"Where are Chloe and Mark?"

"And where's all the food I bought?"

My voice shook with every question.

"I wired them fourteen thousand dollars to take care of you."

Maya stared at the floor.

"They went to Miami for a few days."

"I only wanted some soup."

"Please... don't make this worse."

"Your mother said women recovering from surgery should eat light to cleanse their bodies."

I opened the refrigerator.

It was empty.

Every container of homemade broth was gone.

The smoked salmon.

The prime beef.

Fresh fruit.

Milk.

Vitamins.

Even Liam's imported prescription formula.

Gone.

The only thing left was a handwritten note taped to the inside of the refrigerator door.

It read:

"We went to South Beach for New Year's with Chloe, Mark, Ethan, and his family. Figure something out from the pantry. Don't call David crying and pretending to be a victim. He's working hard to support all of us."

Signed...

My mother.

Maya grabbed my arm.

Her hands were shaking.

"Please don't confront her."

"She'll only say I turned you against your own family."

I didn't raise my voice.

Some anger is too deep for shouting.

I quietly took out my phone.

I photographed the empty refrigerator.

The cold cup of noodles.

The blood on Maya's sweater.

The handwritten note.

Then I wrapped Liam inside my winter coat.

I carried Maya out of the apartment.

As fireworks exploded over the Manhattan skyline, we rushed toward the hospital.

Maya shivered with a rising fever in the back of the cab.

Before putting away my phone, I opened my banking app.

One by one...

I canceled every authorized card connected to my account.

My mother's.

My sister's.

Mark's.

At that exact moment, they were celebrating New Year's at a luxury resort in South Beach, convinced my paycheck would never stop.

They had no idea I was about to review every second of the security camera footage.

And before the holiday was over...

Their vacation would end with police officers at their door.
