Chapter 1 — The Recording That Changed Everything

Chapter 1 — The Recording That Changed Everything

The room went silent as the video played.

On the screen, Ava stood beside Lily’s music box.

The same music box my late husband had bought for our daughter before he passed away.

Lily’s tiny hands reached toward it.

“Please give it back, Ava. Daddy gave this to me.”

Ava hugged the box tighter.

Then Jessica appeared in the background.

“Let her have it,” she whispered.

Ava looked confused.

“Mommy?”

Jessica leaned closer.

“She needs to learn that not everything belongs to her.”

My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

My attorney watched Margaret carefully.

But the worst part had not even started.

The audio continued.

Ava stepped backward.

Her foot caught the rug.

She fell.

There was a loud gasp.

Then silence.

And then Margaret’s voice.

“Cry, sweetheart.”

Everyone froze.

Margaret’s face changed.

“That’s not what it sounds like.”

My attorney pressed pause.

“No?”

She turned toward my mother.

“Because it sounds like you instructed a child to fake fear in order to create a false police report against your own granddaughter.”

Jessica immediately started crying.

“You don’t understand!”

“No,” I said quietly.

“I understand perfectly.”

For years, I believed my mother protected my family.

I believed my sister loved my daughter.

I was wrong.

They did not want to protect Lily.

May you like

They wanted control.

And now they were about to discover what happened when they underestimated me.
