Chapter 6 - The Story He Sold

At the temporary hearing a week later, Adrian wore the navy tie I had bought him for our anniversary.

He looked tired in a careful, expensive way.

“My wife is under tremendous pressure,” he told the judge.

“I just want our family protected.”

I dug my nails into my palm beneath the table.

Rachel slid a pen toward me.

Something to hold.

Something that wasn’t my own skin.

Adrian’s lawyer described my father as controlling and the house as the center of our shared life.

The first part was complicated.

The second part made me sick.

Then Rachel presented the deed, the disputed consent, and Adrian’s texts.

She did not call him a monster.

She let his words sit on the page.

“Mrs. Vale,” the judge asked, “did you authorize a mortgage on this property?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize your husband to sign for you?”

“No.”

Adrian shook his head gently, as if I had forgotten where we parked.

I leaned toward the microphone.

“I approved roof repairs. I did not agree to risk my home.”

The judge left me in temporary possession of the house, ordered financial records preserved, and set further proceedings.

The disputed mortgage would require its own careful review.

Nobody waved a paper and made the debt disappear.

Outside, Adrian caught up to me near the elevators.

“Congratulations,” he said quietly.

“You’ve got your house. What happens when the company dies?”

Rachel stepped beside me.

“Communicate through counsel.”

He ignored her.

“Forty-three families, Olivia. Put that in your little victory speech.”

The elevator opened.

I got in before he could see my hands shake.

Dad was waiting downstairs.

He started to ask what happened, but I held up a hand.

“Did your fund demand its money back?”

His silence answered first.

“Three months ago,” he said.

“After Adrian stopped supplying proper reports.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“It was a business dispute. I didn’t know about the house.”

“Everyone keeps telling me what they didn’t know.”

That night, I went through my old email backups.

I searched the week of the roof repair and found Adrian’s request for my signed approval.

Below it was a forwarded message I had never noticed.

The sender was Camille.

The attachment was a clean scan of my driver’s license.

Her message contained six words.

Will this be enough for Northbridge?
