Chapter 10 - The Backup

The recording wasn’t a confession.
Rachel warned me about that immediately.
But it was another piece of a pattern Adrian could no longer explain with a concerned smile.
An emergency order placed the company’s finances under an independent manager while the investors’ claims were reviewed.
The payroll bridge was approved.
Friday’s checks cleared.
Nina called from her kitchen.
“My phone won’t stop ringing,” she said.
“People are crying.”
For a moment, something good outweighed the fear.
Then the manager’s accountant found a second Bellwether account and missing electronic records around the loan closing.
The bookkeeper’s access had been cut off the same week Nina started asking questions.
“Missing doesn’t mean gone,” I said.
In my old job, losing a project file could cost a contractor weeks.
I had set up automatic backups for Adrian when his office consisted of two desks and a coffee machine.
He had complained about the monthly fee.
I had kept the service anyway.
I gave the manager the vendor’s name.
I did not log in or guess passwords.
Through the company’s authorized access, his team found the archived mailboxes.
By Monday, they had recovered a chain between Adrian and Camille.
She had sent the altered consent to the broker handling the Northbridge application.
Adrian had replied: Use the repair signature. She won’t notice the difference.
I read the sentence until the letters blurred.
Rachel let me put the page down.
“Is this enough?” I asked.
“It’s significant. We’ll preserve it properly and provide it to the lender and investigators.”
No celebration.
No dramatic promise.
Just the next necessary step.
There was another email in the chain.
Camille had asked what would happen if I objected.
Adrian’s answer was worse than the first.
She thinks her father cut her off. She has nowhere to go.
Dad stood beside the window while I read it.
“You were never cut off,” he said.
“I know that now.”
But knowing now did not give me back six years.
The accountant turned to the final attachment.
It was a draft of the divorce settlement.
The same ten-thousand-dollar offer Adrian had placed beside my dinner plate.

Its creation date was five months earlier.
He had been planning my exit while we were choosing names for our daughter.
