Chapter 4 - THE DEAD WOMAN

For several seconds, I couldnât move.
Victoria looked older than the photograph.
But it was her.
Same high cheekbones.
Same long blonde hair.
Same narrow eyes.
Alive.
Very much alive.
âMarcus.â
âIâm at the gate.â
âThereâs a woman outside.â
âI see her.â
âItâs Victoria.â
Marcus went silent.
Then I heard him speaking to someone else.
âDo not let that Mercedes leave.â
My hands started shaking.
Not because of Victoria.
Because of what her existence meant.
Daniel had lied about a dead fiancée.
Patricia had participated.
For years.
Why?
Downstairs, officers entered the mansion.
âDaniel Mercer?â one called.
Daniel shouted from the hallway.
âMy wife is having some kind of episode.â
I nearly laughed.
Of course.
Patricia rushed downstairs.
âSheâs unstable! She locked herself in a room!â
The officer replied, âMaâam, we received a domestic violence call.â
Danielâs voice dropped.
âThat was exaggerated.â
My cheek throbbed.
Marcus said, âDo you want me to come to the study?â
âYes.â
Two minutes later, someone knocked.
âEmily, itâs Marcus. Officer Grant is with me.â
I released the steel latch.
Marcus stepped inside.
He was fifty-eight, silver-haired, always perfectly composed.
But when he saw my face, his expression changed.
âJesus.â
Officer Grant, a woman in her forties, looked at my cheek.
âDid your husband do that?â
âYes.â
âAny other injuries?â
âMy mouth is cut.â
âWe need photographs.â
Marcus walked to Danielâs laptop.
âDonât close anything.â
I pointed at the messages.
He read them.
His face hardened.
âOfficer, you may want to see this.â
She came closer.
Then a commotion erupted downstairs.
A woman screamed.
âNo! Get your hands off me!â
Victoria.
Marcus moved toward the security monitor.
Two officers were escorting her through the entrance.
Patricia saw her.
And collapsed into a chair.
âOh my God.â
Daniel went white.
Victoria looked at him.
Not afraid.
Furious.
âYou idiot,â she snapped.
Daniel rushed toward her.
âWhy are you here?â
âBecause you stopped answering!â
âShut up!â
Officer Grant immediately stepped between them.
Victoria laughed.
âYou told me tonight was handled.â
âStop talking!â
Marcus looked at me.
I felt sick.
Victoria turned toward the staircase.
Her eyes found mine.
For the first time, the woman who had supposedly been dead for seven years was looking directly at me.
Then she smiled.
Not warmly.
Not nervously.
Like someone seeing an obstacle she had expected to disappear.
âSo,â Victoria said.
âThis is Emily.â
Daniel shouted, âVictoria, shut your mouth!â
She ignored him.
âIâve waited five years to meet the woman who stole my life.â
I stared at her.
âStole your life?â
She tilted her head.
âYou really donât know, do you?â
Daniel lunged forward.
Two officers grabbed him.
âDONâT LISTEN TO HER!â
Victoria laughed.
Then she looked at me again.
May you like
âAsk your husband where he was the night your father died.â
Everything inside me stopped.
