Chapter 12 - THE MAN I MARRIED

I stared at Daniel.

“No.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Emily.”

“You saw my father?”

He said nothing.

“You saw him alive?”

“He was barely conscious.”

I felt like the floor moved.

“And you left?”

“I panicked.”

That word again.

The word cowards use when they want terror to erase responsibility.

“You left him there.”

“Patricia said an ambulance was coming.”

Patricia screamed, “Don’t put this on me!”

Daniel spun.

“You said he was fine!”

“He was breathing!”

“You told me to leave!”

“Because you were involved with Cole!”

I looked between them.

The perfect family had finally turned on itself.

Every lie was eating the next lie.

Daniel moved toward me.

“Emily, listen.”

I backed away.

“No.”

“I never wanted your father dead.”

“But you wanted his money.”

He closed his eyes.

“I was desperate.”

“You were greedy.”

“I loved you.”

I laughed.

“You studied me before we met.”

“That changed.”

“You kept Victoria alive in secret.”

“That ended.”

“You stole eight million dollars.”

“I was going to replace it.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I was trying to fix things.”

“You slapped me.”

Silence.

There it was.

No excuse left.

No story big enough.

No lie clever enough.

“You hit me because I said no.”

His shoulders dropped.

For the first time, Daniel looked small.

Not powerful.

Not rich.

Not dangerous.

Just small.

Police arrested Patricia for questioning related to my father’s death.

Cole was taken into custody.

Victoria agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.

Daniel was arrested for domestic assault, fraud-related charges, conspiracy, forgery, and financial theft pending investigation.

As officers walked him toward the door, he looked back at me.

“Emily.”

I didn’t answer.

“Please.”

I had spent years responding to that word.

Please sign this.

Please trust me.

Please don’t embarrass me.

Please help Mom.

Please stop asking questions.

That night, I finally understood that love without respect becomes a cage.

Daniel whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

“For which part?”

He had no answer.

The officers took him away.

At 3:17 in the morning, the mansion became quiet.

The relatives left one by one.

None looked at me.

Marcus sat across from me in the study.

“You should sleep.”

“I don’t think I ever want to sleep again.”

He nodded.

Then handed me a sealed envelope.

“What’s this?”

“Your father left it with me.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“He instructed me to give it to you only if Daniel ever tried to take control of the estate.”

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Emily,

If you are reading this, I was right about Daniel.

But I pray I was wrong about one thing.

I stopped.

Marcus leaned forward.

“What?”

May you like

I continued reading.

I pray he never finds out about the child.
