Chapter 2 â Every Receipt Had My Name on It

No one spoke.
Jimena remained frozen where she sat, her expensive handbag still lying on the floor.
Ricardo couldn't even look at me.
For the first time in twelve years, the man who always had an answer had none.
I calmly placed Jimena's coat over the back of a chair.
"Now," I said, taking a seat across from them, "let's discuss who has actually been paying for your love story."
Ricardo swallowed.
"Diana... please. Let me explain."
"You've had six months."
"I'll take the next five minutes."
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Jimena looked from him to me, confusion slowly replacing arrogance.
"I don't understand," she said. "Ricardo owns three companies."
I almost smiled.
"No."
"He manages one."
"The one I founded."
She frowned.
"He told me he built everything himself."
"He also told you this house was his, didn't he?"
Silence.
"He said..." Jimena hesitated. "...he bought it before you met."
I reached for my tablet on the coffee table.
One by one, I opened documents.
The deed to the house.
My name.
Only mine.
The original incorporation papers of the company.
Founder: Diana Alvarez.
Majority shareholder: Diana Alvarez.
The investment accounts.
My name.
The vacation villa in Cabo.
Paid with my corporate credit card.
The diamond necklace.
Charged to the account I personally guaranteed.
Every luxury Ricardo had used to impress Jimena...
Had been bought with my money.
I slid the tablet across the table.
Jimena stared at the screen.
Then at Ricardo.
Then back at me.
Her face slowly lost every trace of color.
"You..." she whispered to Ricardo.
"You lied to me."
Ricardo rubbed both hands over his face.
"I was going to tell you."
Jimena let out a bitter laugh.
"When?"
"After I thanked you for buying me gifts your wife actually paid for?"
Neither of them looked at me anymore.
For the first time since she arrived, Jimena understood she hadn't stolen another woman's wealthy husband.
She had become the entertainment expense on another woman's credit card.
I folded my hands together.
May you like
"We're still not finished."
"Not even close."
