CHAPTER 4 — A NEW BEGINNING

Three months later...

The courtroom was completely silent.

Ryan accepted a plea agreement after every video, photograph, medical report, and witness statement destroyed his defense.

He was sentenced to eighteen years in state prison for aggravated domestic battery, unlawful restraint, and abuse resulting in serious bodily harm.

Linda received seven years for criminal neglect, intimidation, and assisting in the abuse.

Neither looked at Emily as they were led away.

Two weeks later...

Emily gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Colonel James Bennett stood outside the delivery room holding his grandson for the first time.

The tiny boy wrapped his hand around one of the colonel's fingers.

The old soldier who had faced combat without fear quietly wiped away a tear.

"What should we call him?" Emily asked.

The colonel smiled.

"How about Hope?"

Emily laughed through her tears.

"No..."

She looked down at her son.

"We'll call him James."

"So he'll always know the kind of man his grandfather was."

Years later, little James would grow up hearing one story over and over.

Not about violence.

Not about fear.

But about the day one father refused to believe a lie...

Lifted a simple blue blanket...

May you like

And saved two lives with a single act of courage.

THE END
