CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH THEY COULDN'T HIDE

Chicago Memorial Hospital became a crime scene before sunset.

Doctors confirmed Emily had suffered repeated physical abuse over several months.

The bruises were healing in different stages.

Some were weeks old.

Some were only hours old.

The obstetrician looked directly at Detective Hale.

"This wasn't accidental."

"This was systematic."

Meanwhile, investigators searched Ryan's apartment.

They found Emily's broken phone hidden inside a kitchen drawer.

Her passport locked inside Ryan's desk.

Medical appointments she had never been allowed to attend.

Then they discovered something even worse.

A hidden security camera facing the bedroom.

Detectives recovered weeks of recordings.

No one in the room spoke as the first video played.

Ryan shoved his pregnant wife against the wall because dinner wasn't ready.

Another recording showed Linda watching silently while her son slapped Emily across the face.

She never tried to stop him.

Instead she laughed.

Hours later, both were arrested.

Linda screamed as officers placed handcuffs around her wrists.

"You can't do this!"

"I did nothing!"

Detective Hale looked her straight in the eye.

"You watched."

"You encouraged him."

"Under Illinois law, that makes you part of it."

Ryan lowered his head.

For the first time since anyone had met him...

He had nothing left to say.

Across town, Colonel Bennett sat beside Emily's hospital bed.

She reached for his hand.

"I'm sorry, Dad."

His eyes filled with tears.

"No."

May you like

"You survived."

"That's the only apology I'll ever accept."
