Chapter 7 - HE TOOK HER

Sarah drove like the world was ending.
Maybe it was.
She called Mark six times.
No answer.
On the seventh call, he picked up.
“Where is she?”
“Sarah—”
“WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?”
“She’s with me.”
“You took her from Rachel’s house.”
“I exercised my legal rights.”
“You lied to a judge.”
“I presented evidence.”
“What evidence?”
“Your behavior.”
Sarah almost screamed.
“What behavior?”
“Police were called to our home. You threatened people. You fled with Lily. Then you claimed you were being followed.”
“I was followed!”
“You sound paranoid.”
Sarah went cold.
He was doing exactly what the petition said.
Building a story.
“You planned this.”
“I’m protecting Lily.”
“From me?”
“Yes.”
Sarah gripped the wheel.
“You stood there while Evelyn hurt her.”
“You’re exaggerating.”
“She pushed her.”
“It was an accident.”
“Put Lily on the phone.”
“No.”
“Mark.”
“You’re emotional.”
“PUT MY DAUGHTER ON THE PHONE.”
He hung up.
Sarah screamed and slammed her palm against the steering wheel.
Then Daniel called.
“Do not go to the house.”
“He has Lily.”
“I know.”
“I’m getting her.”
“No.”
“Daniel—”
“If you violate the temporary order, he wins.”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“So I just leave her there?”
“For today.”
“I can’t.”
“You have a hearing tomorrow morning.”
Sarah almost missed a red light.
“What?”
“Emergency custody review. I called a family-law attorney I trust.”
“Tomorrow?”
“Eight-thirty.”
Sarah pulled into a parking lot.
Her hands shook.
“What do we need?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
“That Mark manufactured this.”
Sarah wiped her face.
“I have the messages.”
“Good.”
“And financial records.”
“Better.”
“But nothing proves he threatened Lily.”
Daniel paused.
“What about the security cameras?”
Sarah froze.
“What?”
“Your house has exterior cameras.”
“Mark controls the system.”
“Does anyone else have access?”
Sarah thought.
Then remembered.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“Our neighbor.”
Mark’s obsession with smart-home technology suddenly mattered.
Their next-door neighbor, Tom Garcia, had helped install the system.
Sarah called him.
“Tom, I need help.”
Thirty minutes later, Tom met her at a coffee shop.
He looked uncomfortable.
“Sarah, I don’t want to get involved in your marriage.”
“This isn’t about my marriage.”
She showed him the threatening messages.
His expression changed.
“Jesus.”
“I need footage from last night.”
“I can access backup clips if Mark didn’t delete them.”
Tom opened his laptop.
They logged into an old administrator account.
Sarah held her breath.
There.
Video from the night of the party.
Guests arriving.
Police.
Sarah leaving with Lily.
Then, twenty-three minutes later, the black SUV pulled into the driveway.
The same SUV that followed her.
A man stepped out.
He entered the house.
Ten minutes later, Mark came outside.
Sarah leaned closer.
Mark handed the man something.
Cash.
Then pointed down the street.
The man nodded and left.
Sarah’s blood turned ice-cold.
Tom whispered, “That doesn’t look good.”
“No.”
Then the footage changed.
Another camera.
Side entrance.
At 1:38 a.m., Mark carried a cardboard box from the house to his car.
Sarah zoomed in.
Printed on the box were the words:
BENNETT FAMILY RECORDS.
Sarah stared.
“That box was in my father’s study.”
Tom glanced at her.
“What was in it?”
“Bank statements. Tax records. Property documents.”
The footage continued.
Mark loaded the box.
Then another person stepped out of the side door.
Evelyn.
She walked straight to Mark.
They argued.
No sound.
Then Evelyn shoved a folder against Mark’s chest.
He grabbed her wrist.
She slapped him.
Tom looked at Sarah.
“Can we hear audio?”
“Maybe.”
He changed settings.
Static crackled.
Then voices.
Evelyn shouted:
“You said Sarah would never find out!”
Mark snapped back:
“She won’t if you stop panicking.”
“What about the trust?”
“I’ll get control of Lily.”
Sarah stopped breathing.

Then Mark said the words that would define the entire custody case.
“Once I have Lily, I control the money.”
