Chapter 1 - DON’T TOUCH MY DAUGHTER

“GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY DAUGHTER!”

Sarah Bennett’s scream cut through the birthday party so sharply that the entire room went silent.

A fork hit the floor.

Someone dropped a glass.

And six-year-old Lily stood beside the dessert table, shaking so badly she could barely breathe.

“Mommy…”

Sarah pushed through the crowd.

“Mommy, help me!”

Lily’s cheek was red. Frosting covered the front of her yellow dress. Her tiny hands were trembling.

Standing over her was Evelyn Cross.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect white dress.

And absolutely no shame.

Sarah grabbed Lily and pulled her behind her.

“What did you do?”

Evelyn blinked. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

“Oh, for God’s sake, Sarah. She touched my cake.”

Sarah stared at her.

“She’s six.”

“She stuck her fingers in it.”

“She’s six years old!”

Evelyn folded her arms. “Then maybe teach her some manners.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Sarah felt heat rising up her neck.

“What did you do to her?”

Evelyn glanced around at the guests.

“It was an accident.”

Lily pulled on Sarah’s sleeve.

“She pushed me.”

Sarah froze.

Behind her, Mark Bennett finally stepped forward.

Her husband.

Lily’s father.

And the man Sarah expected to defend their child.

Instead, Mark looked annoyed.

“Sarah, stop.”

She slowly turned.

“Stop what?”

“You’re making a scene.”

Sarah laughed once.

A short, disbelieving sound.

“She pushed our daughter.”

Mark lowered his voice.

“Not here.”

“Why? Because your friends are watching?”

“Lower your voice.”

“No.”

“Sarah.”

“No!”

Mark’s jaw tightened.

“You always do this. You turn everything into a disaster.”

Sarah looked from Mark to Evelyn.

Then back again.

Something inside her cracked.

“You’re defending her?”

“I’m trying to keep you from humiliating yourself.”

Sarah’s eyes narrowed.

“Interesting choice of words.”

Mark stepped closer.

“Take Lily upstairs.”

Sarah pulled Lily tighter against her.

“Neither one of you is getting near my child again.”

Evelyn rolled her eyes.

“Oh, please.”

Mark’s face changed.

That cold expression Sarah had seen more often lately.

The one that made her feel like a stranger in her own home.

“You don’t get to make that decision alone.”

Sarah stared at him.

“I’m her mother.”

“And I own this house,” Mark snapped. “I pay for this family. You have no power here.”

Silence.

Even Evelyn looked surprised.

Sarah felt Lily’s fingers tighten around hers.

Then something almost calm settled over her.

Sarah smiled.

Not because anything was funny.

Because she was done being afraid.

“You really want to talk about money?”

Mark’s eyes flickered.

Sarah took one step closer.

“You want to tell everyone how you stole my father’s inheritance?”

Mark’s face drained of color.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Someone whispered, “What?”

Mark grabbed Sarah’s wrist.

“Shut up.”

Sarah pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.”

“You don’t know what you’re saying.”

“Oh, I know exactly what I’m saying.”

A siren sounded outside.

Then another.

Mark stared toward the front windows.

“What did you do?”

Sarah didn’t answer.

Red and blue lights flashed across the walls.

Two police officers entered through the front door.

The older officer looked directly at Sarah.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

“Yes.”

Mark moved quickly.

“Officer, this is a family misunderstanding.”

Sarah stared at him.

“It stopped being a misunderstanding three months ago.”

Mark whispered through clenched teeth.

“Cancel this. Now.”

Sarah shook her head.

“There’s nothing left to cancel.”

The officer stepped closer.

“Ma’am, we received a report involving a child and possible financial theft.”

Mark’s eyes widened.

Evelyn suddenly backed away from the table.

And that was when Sarah noticed something sticking out of Evelyn’s purse.

A blue envelope.

Her dead father’s handwriting was on the front.

Sarah stopped breathing.

Because written across that envelope were three words.

May you like

FOR SARAH ONLY.

And Sarah had never seen it before.
