Chapter 2: The Woman Who Pretended To Be Family

Security arrived within minutes.
The honeymoon suite that was supposed to be filled with champagne and wedding laughter became a crime scene.
Daniel stood near the window.
Vanessa sat on the couch.
Both pretending they were innocent.
But I had something they didn’t.
The truth.
I slowly crawled out from beneath the bed.
Everyone turned.
Daniel’s face changed instantly.
Shock.
Fear.
Disbelief.
"Emma..."
He whispered my name like he was still allowed to say it.
I looked at him.
The man I married three hours ago.
The man who kissed my forehead.
The man who promised forever.
"You thought I was asleep?"
My voice was calm.
That scared him more than anger would have.
Vanessa immediately stood.
"Emma, wait. You don’t understand—"
I raised my phone.
The recording was still playing.
Her own voice filled the room.
"Find the notarized loan packet before she wakes up."
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Daniel looked at the phone.
Then at me.
Then he understood.
He had lost.
"I can explain."
I almost laughed.
Explain?
How do you explain planning to destroy someone who trusted you?
How do you explain putting sleeping pills in your wife’s drink?
How do you explain turning a wedding into a business deal?
"You never loved me," I said.
Daniel looked away.
And that silence was my answer.
Then Thomas placed the folder on the table.
"Mrs. Carter, there’s something else you need to see."
I opened it.
Inside were copies of documents I had never signed.
Bank transfer forms.
Property agreements.
A loan authorization.
But the worst part was the date.
They had been preparing this months before the wedding.
This wasn’t about a house.
This was about my inheritance.
My father’s company.
Everything my family had built.
Daniel wasn’t marrying me.
He was buying access.
Then Celeste called.
Daniel’s mother.
The woman who had hugged me before my wedding.
The woman who called me daughter.
Security placed the call on speaker.
"Daniel?" she asked.
No one answered.
Then she heard my voice.
"Hello, Celeste."
Silence.
A long, painful silence.
"Emma..."
Her tone changed.
Not guilty.
Annoyed.
"You’re making a mistake."
I smiled bitterly.
"No. The mistake was believing you."
Celeste tried to manipulate me.
She said Daniel was under pressure.
She said everything was a misunderstanding.
She said I was ruining my own marriage.
Then I played the recording.
Her own voice filled the room.
"The debt is already tied to her. The house is collateral. Once the transfer clears, Daniel walks clean."
For the first time…
Celeste had nothing to say.
The police arrived shortly after.
Daniel and Vanessa were taken for questioning.
But before leaving, Daniel stopped.
He looked at me.
And for a second, I saw the man I thought I loved.
Then he said:
"I really did love you once."
I stared at him.
"Maybe."
I paused.
"But someone who loves me doesn’t plan my destruction."
And I walked away.
Leaving behind my wedding dress.
May you like
My marriage.
And the woman I used to be.
