Chapter 9 - The Leak Inside

I did not accuse Agent Blake.

That would have been reckless.

I also stopped telling him everything.

That felt worse.

Trust had become a currency I could no longer spend casually.

Evelyn noticed.

“You think the leak is federal?”

“I think it could be anywhere.”

“Local police?”

“Maybe.”

“Company security?”

“Maybe.”

“Daniel’s lawyer?”

“Definitely.”

She sighed.

“That narrows it down to everyone.”

“Exactly.”

So we created a test.

Three pieces of false information.

Three different channels.

To Agent Blake, we suggested I might travel to Boston.

To local police, Evelyn hinted we were relocating to a house in Evanston.

To Daniel’s corporate counsel, she casually referenced a possible settlement meeting at a downtown hotel.

Then we waited.

The first leak came in ninety minutes.

A black SUV appeared outside the Evanston house.

Local police channel.

Agent Blake took it personally.

He started an internal inquiry.

Two hours later, they identified the officer who had accessed my protective-location request without authorization.

Detective Samuel Price.

Twenty-two years on the force.

No disciplinary history.

And multiple unexplained deposits over the last eighteen months.

One of them from a shell vendor tied to Vanessa’s brother.

The leak had a name.

Price was arrested before midnight.

His phone contained messages to Daniel.

Short.

Coded.

But clear enough.

They know about Vale.

Your wife talked.

Move now.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel had been warned.

Not once.

Repeatedly.

Agent Blake looked furious.

“We should have caught this.”

“Yes.”

He looked at me.

“I understand why you stopped trusting me.”

“Good.”

He nodded.

“No argument.”

That earned him some of it back.

The next breakthrough came from Maria.

She found a locked drawer behind a false panel in Daniel’s office.

Inside were old external drives.

One contained backups.

Not full financial books.

Audio.

Security video.

And draft contracts.

Daniel had recorded people.

Employees.

Vendors.

Executives.

Even Vanessa.

Insurance.

Just like she said.

One file was labeled C_Mercer.

My hands shook before Evelyn opened it.

The audio began with Daniel’s voice.

“You don’t need to understand every document, Claire.”

Then mine.

From years earlier.

“What am I signing?”

“Routine board authorization.”

“I’m tired.”

“I know.”

Paper moved.

Then Daniel laughed softly.

“Trust me.”

The recording ended.

I stared at the laptop.

He had recorded himself deceiving me.

Why?

Because narcissists always believe the record will save them.

Then another file appeared.

No date.

No label.

A video.

Daniel and Marcus Vale in a private office.

Vale slid a ledger across the desk.

Daniel said, “If this ever comes out, Claire takes the fall.”

Vale smiled.

“Your wife?”

Daniel answered without hesitation.

“She’ll never see it coming.”

I watched that sentence twice.

Then a third time.

Not because I needed proof.

Because part of me still needed to understand that the man I married had once sat across from another criminal and calmly planned my destruction.

Evelyn closed the laptop.

“You okay?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

And this time, I meant it.

May you like

Because grief was finally becoming something cleaner.

Evidence.
