Chapter 5 - He Said My Name

Daniel stood on the courthouse steps surrounded by cameras.
I watched from Evelyn’s office.
He had just left a preliminary shareholder hearing.
His lawyer whispered something.
Daniel ignored him.
Then he stepped toward the microphones.
“My wife, Claire Mercer, had access to the company’s books for years.”
There it was.
My name.
He continued.
“She has both the technical knowledge and personal motivation to manipulate records during a hostile divorce.”
Evelyn looked at me.
I felt strangely calm.
Daniel kept going.
“I’m saddened that a private marital dispute has become an attempt to destroy hundreds of employees and their families.”
That was clever.
Make himself the protector.
Make me the bitter wife.
Make the company the victim.
Then Vanessa stepped beside him.
And made it worse.
“Daniel has done nothing but protect his family and this company.”
I laughed.
Actually laughed.
Evelyn turned toward me.
“What?”
“She just gave us motive.”
“For what?”
“Coordination.”
Vanessa was not a silent employee anymore.
She had tied herself publicly to Daniel’s defense.
Which meant every later contradiction would matter.
By afternoon, Daniel’s statement was everywhere.
My phone filled with unknown numbers.
Reporters.
Old colleagues.
People I had not heard from in ten years.
Some believed me.
Some didn’t.
I shut the phone off.
At 4:30, Noah came home from school unusually quiet.
I knew immediately.
“What happened?”
He shrugged.
“Noah.”
“A kid said you stole money from Dad.”
My stomach twisted.
“What did you say?”
“That he was stupid.”
Despite everything, I smiled.
Then Noah’s eyes filled.
“Did you?”
I sat beside him.
“No.”
“Did Dad?”
I hesitated.
“I don’t know everything yet.”
That was the truth.
“Are you getting divorced?”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
“Because of Vanessa?”
My blood ran cold.
“Who told you that name?”
He looked confused.
“Dad.”
“When?”
“This morning.”
I stared at him.
“Dad called the school office and talked to me.”
Evelyn, sitting across the room, stood immediately.
“He what?”
Noah flinched.
I softened my voice.
“What did he say?”
“He said Vanessa was just his friend and you were confused.”
Of course.
Daniel had contacted Noah without telling me.
Not illegal under the current order.
But manipulative.
Then Noah reached into his backpack.
“And he said to give you this.”
He handed me a folded note.
My fingers tightened.
I opened it.
One sentence.
Stop before Noah learns what his mother really did.
My chest went cold.
Evelyn read it.
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
Then my phone buzzed.
A text from a number I didn’t recognize.
There was an attachment.
A scanned document.
A police incident report.
Twelve years old.
My name appeared in the header.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Claire?”
I stared at the report.
Then at the date.
And suddenly I remembered something I had spent years trying to forget.
May you like
Daniel had found the one mistake from my past I never told Noah about.
And he was about to use it.
