Chapter 5 - THE SECOND BETRAYAL

Two officers entered the mansion while Vanessa sat in a chair with her arms crossed.

I gave my statement.

The officers reviewed the security footage.

Adrian tried twice to interrupt.

Both times, Dad's attorney told him to remain silent.

Eventually, one officer turned toward Adrian.

“Mr. Vale, based on the footage and Mrs. Vale's statement, we're placing you under arrest on suspicion of assault.”

Adrian stared at me.

“Claire.”

I said nothing.

“Claire, don't do this.”

The officer moved behind him.

He looked suddenly smaller.

Not the brilliant CEO.

Not the dominant husband.

Just a frightened man realizing consequences had finally arrived.

“You know me,” he said.

I looked at him.

“I thought I did.”

The handcuffs clicked.

Vanessa looked away.

The second officer asked her about the physical confrontation earlier that night.

She immediately began crying.

Real tears this time.

“She attacked me.”

The officer reviewed the footage.

“No, ma'am. The video shows you striking Mrs. Vale first.”

Vanessa stopped crying.

Dad almost smiled.

The officer continued.

“But that's not why we need you to stay.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I informed law enforcement about potential financial crimes discovered on the flash drive.”

Her face changed.

“You had no right.”

“The drive was removed from Mr. Vale's safe during an active incident.”

Adrian turned toward Vanessa.

“You were draining the company.”

“Shut up.”

“You lied about the baby.”

“Shut up!”

“You used me.”

Vanessa shot to her feet.

“You think you're some genius?”

Everyone froze.

She pointed at Adrian.

“You were desperate before I ever touched your company.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You were borrowing against everything.”

“Vanessa.”

“You were moving numbers around every quarter just to look solvent.”

He stepped toward her.

The officer pulled him back.

She laughed bitterly.

“Tell them, Adrian.”

“Stop.”

“Tell your precious wife how many times she saved you without knowing it.”

I looked at him.

“What does she mean?”

Adrian's face turned gray.

Dad's expression hardened.

“Claire.”

“What did you do?”

Adrian said nothing.

Vanessa answered for him.

“He used you.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

She smiled at me.

“Every time Sterling-backed money came into his orbit, he leveraged it.”

Dad straightened.

Vanessa continued.

“Your name opened doors, even when people didn't know exactly who you were. Adrian figured that out two years ago.”

I looked at my husband.

“You knew?”

He shook his head.

“Not who your father was.”

“But you knew my connections mattered.”

“I suspected.”

The betrayal cut deeper than I expected.

“So you let me believe you never noticed.”

“Claire—”

“You called me useless tonight.”

“I was angry.”

“You said I contributed nothing.”

“I didn't mean—”

“Did you deliberately send me into meetings with people you couldn't convince?”

Silence.

Vanessa laughed.

“Oh, he did more than that.”

Adrian shouted, “Enough!”

She ignored him.

“He had you sign introductions, recommendation letters, dinner invitations. Then he used those relationships to borrow money.”

Dad's jaw tightened.

“How much?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask him about eighteen million.”

Adrian's eyes closed.

I felt suddenly cold.

“What eighteen million?”

Dad stepped toward him.

“Answer my daughter.”

Adrian opened his eyes.

May you like

Then he whispered the sentence that changed the entire case.

“The money is tied to Claire's trust.”
