Chapter 12 - THE ACCOUNT

The account contained $6.4 million.

It had been opened eight months earlier.

My name appeared as beneficial owner.

My Social Security number was attached.

My forged signature appeared on six documents.

And money had moved through it into companies tied to David.

I stared at the screen.

“If investigators see this without context, it looks like I helped them.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

Dad paced.

“David built an insurance policy.”

Mom looked at me.

“If the scheme collapsed, Claire could be blamed.”

I felt suddenly nauseated.

Adrian had forged documents connected to my trust.

David had routed money through an account under my identity.

Vanessa had stolen from Vale Capital.

Everyone had used my name.

My silence.

My reputation.

My marriage.

I was done being the quiet person everyone treated like a tool.

“Get Adrian.”

Daniel looked at me.

“He's cooperating through counsel.”

“I want to talk to him.”

Dad began, “Claire—”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“No more deciding what I can handle.”

Dad stopped.

Thirty minutes later, Adrian appeared on secure video.

He looked at me.

“Claire.”

“Did you know about the account?”

He stared at the table.

“Yes.”

Dad swore.

I didn't react.

“How much did you know?”

“David told me it was a temporary holding structure.”

“In my name.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said it would improve the financing profile.”

“You believed that?”

“No.”

His answer surprised me.

I leaned closer.

“You knew something was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“And you did it anyway.”

His eyes filled with shame.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He took a long breath.

“Because Vale Capital was dying.”

I said nothing.

“I'd built my entire identity around being successful.”

His voice grew quieter.

“Every article. Every interview. Every friend. Everyone thought I was brilliant.”

He laughed once.

“I wasn't.”

I watched him unravel.

“I couldn't stand the idea that you might find out.”

“So you committed fraud.”

“Yes.”

“You cheated.”

“Yes.”

“You hurt me.”

His face broke.

“Yes.”

“And when Vanessa told you she was pregnant, you decided replacing me would solve everything.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

I expected anger.

Instead, I felt something colder.

Understanding.

Not forgiveness.

Understanding.

Adrian had destroyed himself because he was terrified of being seen as weak.

“So tell me everything.”

He looked up.

“I already did.”

“No.”

I leaned toward the screen.

“You haven't.”

He hesitated.

Then finally said, “There is one more thing.”

Dad looked sharply at him.

Adrian swallowed.

“Vanessa gave me a document two months ago.”

“What document?”

“A new beneficiary designation.”

“For what?”

“Claire's trust.”

Dad stood.

“Impossible.”

Adrian shook his head.

“She claimed Claire had signed it.”

“Who was the new beneficiary?” I asked.

Adrian stared at me.

“If you died before the divorce was final?”

I felt cold.

“Who?”

He whispered one name.

“Your uncle David.”

May you like

The room went silent.

And suddenly Vanessa's fake pregnancy wasn't the darkest part of their plan anymore.
