Chapter 7 - THE LIE THAT ALMOST TOOK MY CHILDREN

The custody hearing happened three days later.
Kate walked into court wearing the same innocent expression she had used in my home.
She cried.
She apologized.
She told everyone she loved my children.
“I only wanted to help them heal after Emily’s death.”
The judge looked at her sympathetically.
Then she turned toward me.
“Mr. Ashford, why did you ignore signs that your daughter was struggling?”
That question destroyed me.
Because I had no answer.
I failed my children.
But I was not going to lose them.
Then Lily walked into the courtroom.
Everyone turned.
She held the notebook.
The same notebook Kate tried to destroy.
“I wrote it because nobody listened.”
The room became silent.
Kate’s expression changed.
