Chapter 2 - The Secret Daniel Left Behind

The police arrived before Richard could finish searching Daniel’s office.

I watched through the window as two officers walked toward the front door.

For the first time that morning, I saw fear cross my father’s face.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

Because he finally realized something.

He had expected me to cry.

He had expected me to beg.

He had expected a grieving pregnant woman who had nobody left.

He was wrong.

The door opened.

Richard stepped outside.

“What is this about?”

Officer Daniels looked at him.

“Sir, we received a report of an assault.”

Richard immediately pointed at me.

“She’s confused. My daughter is emotional because of her husband’s death.”

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because that was his plan.

Make me look unstable.

Make me look like the grieving widow who couldn’t handle reality.

But he forgot one thing.

Daniel knew him.

Better than I thought.

The officer walked toward me.

“Ma’am, can you tell me what happened?”

I looked at my father.

The man who raised me.

The man who was supposed to protect me.

The man who had just dragged me across my own floor.

“He came into my house without permission.”

Richard interrupted.

“It’s my daughter’s house. I’m her father.”

The officer looked at him.

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

I took a breath.

“He grabbed me by my hair and dragged me outside.”

The officer’s expression changed.

“And you are eight months pregnant?”

I nodded.

“My water broke.”

Everything became quiet.

Even Richard stopped talking.

The ambulance arrived minutes later.

As they helped me onto the stretcher, I saw Kelsey standing behind my father.

She looked nervous now.

No more smiling.

No more laughing.

Because she finally understood.

The game had changed.

At the hospital, Margaret arrived before the doctor finished checking me.

She walked into the room carrying a black folder.

Her expression was serious.

“Emily.”

I had known Margaret for years.

She had been Daniel’s attorney before we even married.

She had handled our wills.

Our business documents.

Our investments.

But I had never seen her look this angry.

“What is happening?” I asked.

She sat beside me.

“Your father attempted to access Daniel’s company accounts this morning.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

“By submitting paperwork claiming he was the legal representative of the estate.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Yes.”

She opened the folder.

“Because Daniel created a trust.”

I stared at her.

“A trust?”

She nodded.

“Six months ago.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

Margaret’s face softened.

“Because he wanted to surprise you.”

My eyes filled.

“He was planning something?”

A small smile appeared.

“He was planning your future.”

She handed me a document.

I looked down.

The words blurred through my tears.

Hale-Mercer Logistics.

Investment accounts.

Property protection.

Beneficiary:

Emily Mercer.

And beneath that…

Child of Daniel and Emily Mercer.

My hand covered my mouth.

“He protected our baby?”

Margaret nodded.

“Daniel knew your father had a history of controlling behavior.”

I looked away.

Because that hurt.

Daniel saw what I tried to ignore.

“He knew?”

“He told me once…”

Margaret hesitated.

“He said, ‘Emily has spent her whole life thinking she needs permission to be happy. I want to make sure nobody can take that away from her.’”

A tear rolled down my cheek.

I pressed my hand against my stomach.

Daniel was gone.

But somehow…

He was still protecting us.

Then Margaret placed another paper in front of me.

“This is the part you need to see.”

I looked down.

“What is it?”

“Your father signed something yesterday.”

“What?”

“A temporary power transfer request.”

My heart sank.

“Can he do that?”

“No.”

Margaret looked directly at me.

“But he believed he could.”

“Why?”

She opened another page.

Because on the bottom was a signature.

My signature.

Except it wasn’t mine.

Someone had copied it.

Someone had forged my name.

I stared at the page.

“Who did this?”

Margaret didn’t answer immediately.

Then she quietly said:

“We need to find out whether your father acted alone.”

My blood ran cold.

Because suddenly I knew.

Richard wasn’t just trying to steal my house.

Someone had helped him.

May you like

And whoever that person was…

They knew exactly how to destroy my life.
