Chapter 13 - The Box Daniel Hid For Me

The storage facility was hidden behind an old warehouse.

Nothing about it looked important.

That was exactly why Daniel chose it.

He always believed the safest secrets were the ones nobody thought to search for.

The manager checked the code.

Then looked at me.

“Are you Emily Mercer?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“Your husband left instructions.”

My heart tightened.

“What instructions?”

The man handed me a small envelope.

“Only to give this to you if you arrived alone.”

I looked at Margaret.

Then back at him.

“Why alone?”

He shrugged.

“Daniel said, ‘Emily will know who deserves to stand beside her.’”

Those words hurt.

Because Daniel trusted me.

He knew I would survive this.

Inside the envelope was a key.

And one sentence.

THE TRUTH IS IN THE BOX.

We entered the storage room.

In the center sat a black metal container.

No name.

No label.

Just a lock.

I inserted the key.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

A recorder.

And a second letter.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you the way I promised.

I stopped.

“No…”

Margaret touched my shoulder.

But there was something I needed you to know.

I never regretted choosing you.

Not once.

I smiled through tears.

Daniel continued.

Your father believes power comes from controlling people.

Victor believes money gives him ownership over everything.

But they are wrong.

The strongest thing a person can have is someone worth fighting for.

I looked at my stomach.

Our daughter.

Then I found the final page.

A list of names.

Payments.

Dates.

And one shocking entry.

Richard Hale.

Amount received:

$750,000.

Purpose:

REMOVE EMILY MERCER FROM CONTROL.

My hands went numb.

My father didn’t just want my house.

He had been paid to destroy my life.

Then Margaret picked up the recorder.

“Listen.”

We pressed play.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“She won’t fight.”

Victor answered.

“She’s emotional.”

Richard laughed.

“She’s always been weak.”

My eyes filled with anger.

Then came Kelsey’s voice.

“What about the baby?”

Richard replied:

“Once Emily is gone, everything belongs where it should.”

I closed my eyes.

My own father.

Planning my disappearance.

Planning to take my child.

Planning to erase me.

Margaret stopped the recording.

“Emily.”

I opened my eyes.

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“We finish this.”

Then the door behind us slammed shut.

We turned.

A man stood there.

May you like

Victor Lang.

And he was not alone.
