Chapter 4 - The House with Locks on the Outside

The lake house had belonged to my grandmother.
It sat forty minutes outside Brookline at the end of a narrow road surrounded by pine trees.
Nobody had lived there since she died.
My parents claimed the pipes were broken.
They claimed the foundation was unsafe.
They had forbidden everyone from entering.
But Melissa knew Arthur used it.
“He goes there when he doesn’t want anyone to find him.”
She was sitting in the back of Officer Ramirez’s patrol car.
Her hands would not stop shaking.
I remained at the hospital with Gigi.
Dana and three officers drove toward the lake house with Melissa.
Nora arrived twenty minutes later.
My attorney walked into the emergency room wearing a black coat over her pajamas.
She took one look at Gigi’s cheek and became completely still.
“That bruise came from Arthur?”
“Yes.”
“And Charles helped him plan it?”
I showed her Daniel’s video.
Nora watched it without speaking.
When it ended, she took off her glasses.
“This changes everything.”
“What did my father file?”
She opened her laptop.
“I’ve been checking the court system.”
Her fingers moved quickly across the keyboard.
Then her expression darkened.
“There it is.”
She turned the screen toward me.
My parents had filed an emergency guardianship petition.
They claimed I was experiencing a mental health crisis.
They claimed I regularly screamed at Gigi.
They claimed I had threatened to disappear with her.
They had attached statements from twelve relatives at the party.
The statements were dated three days earlier.
Three days before Arthur slapped my daughter.
“They signed these before the party.”
“Yes.”
“They planned every word.”
The statements described an incident that had not yet happened.
They said I became violent during Sophie’s birthday party.
They said I frightened the children.
They said my parents had been forced to intervene for Gigi’s protection.
They even described me leaving with Gigi against medical advice.
But at the time those statements were written, Gigi had not been injured.
We had not gone to the hospital.
“They created the story before they created the event.”
Nora nodded.
“They expected you to scream.”
“I did scream.”
“You saw a grown man strike your toddler.”
“A judge will understand that.”
“Will they?”
Nora looked directly at me.
“The video will help.”
“The hospital report will help.”
“But your family has been preparing this for months.”
My phone rang.
It was Dana.
I answered immediately.
“Did you find Sophie?”
“We found the house.”
Her voice sounded strained.
“The front door was unlocked.”
“Was anyone inside?”
“Your mother is here.”
“Where is Sophie?”
“We’re searching.”
A noise exploded through the phone.
Someone was shouting.
Then I heard my mother’s voice.
“You have no authority to be here!”
Dana spoke to someone away from the phone.
“Check the second floor.”
My heart hammered.
“Dana?”
“I’m here.”
“Where are Arthur and my father?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Another officer shouted from upstairs.
“We found a locked room!”
I stood so quickly that Gigi woke.
She began crying.
Nora took her gently while I pressed the phone against my ear.
There was the sound of wood splintering.
Then silence.
A child began screaming.
“Sophie!”
Melissa’s voice echoed through the phone.
Footsteps pounded up the stairs.
Dana breathed out.
“We have her.”
“Is she hurt?”
“She’s conscious.”
“Is Arthur there?”
“No.”
I heard Melissa comforting her daughter.
Then Sophie said something so softly I almost missed it.
“Aunt Clara didn’t hurt me.”
Dana crouched near her.
“Nobody said she did.”
Sophie began to cry.
“Grandma told me I had to say Aunt Clara hit me.”
My knees weakened.
Nora helped me into a chair.
Dana’s voice became very calm.
“Sophie, did your grandmother tell you why?”
“Because Daddy needs Gigi’s money.”
The emergency room became silent around me.
Then an officer shouted from outside the lake house.
A vehicle engine roared.
Dana ran toward a window.
“Arthur’s here!”
There was a crash.
May you like
Someone screamed.
Then the call disconnected.
