Chapter 2 - The Man Waiting Outside

Arthur did not move when the police officer walked toward his truck.

He remained behind the wheel with both hands resting on the steering wheel.

His face looked calm.

Too calm.

Officer Ramirez knocked on the driver’s window.

Arthur slowly lowered it.

“Is there a problem?”

“You need to leave the hospital property.”

“I’m waiting for my sister.”

“She doesn’t want contact with you.”

Arthur looked past the officer and saw me standing inside the glass entrance.

His mouth curved into a small smile.

“She’s emotional.”

Officer Ramirez did not turn around.

“She has filed a police report stating that you struck her two-year-old daughter.”

Arthur laughed.

“I tapped the kid.”

“You admitted to hitting her?”

“I disciplined her.”

Officer Ramirez stared at him.

“You are not her parent.”

Arthur’s smile disappeared.

“Our family handles things privately.”

“Not anymore.”

Arthur looked directly at me.

For the first time that night, I saw something dangerous beneath his confidence.

He was afraid.

He opened the truck door.

Officer Ramirez immediately stepped back.

“Stay inside the vehicle.”

“I just want to talk to Clara.”

“She doesn’t want to talk.”

Arthur’s voice rose.

“She stole confidential family documents.”

My pulse jumped.

He knew about the folder.

Officer Ramirez placed one hand near his radio.

“Leave now.”

Arthur looked at me through the glass.

“Clara!”

His voice echoed across the parking lot.

“You don’t know what you’re doing!”

Gigi woke in my arms and began to cry.

I turned her face into my shoulder.

Arthur pointed at me.

“You think that folder protects you?”

Officer Ramirez ordered him back into the truck.

Arthur did not listen.

“You have one chance to fix this!”

I stepped outside before fear could stop me.

Officer Ramirez immediately moved between us.

I kept Gigi against my chest.

“What do you want, Arthur?”

“You’re going to delete everything.”

“No.”

“You’re going to tell the police this was a misunderstanding.”

“No.”

His nostrils flared.

“You’re destroying Dad.”

“Dad forged my signature.”

“You can’t prove that.”

“My attorney already did.”

For half a second, Arthur looked stunned.

Then he laughed again.

But the sound was hollow.

“You’re bluffing.”

“You emptied Gigi’s education account this morning.”

His eyes flickered.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

“You knew.”

Arthur lowered his voice.

“The company needed temporary cash.”

“You stole from a child.”

“It’s family money.”

“It was Gigi’s money.”

“She’s two.”

“And you thought that meant she couldn’t stop you.”

Arthur took one step toward me.

Officer Ramirez placed a hand against his chest.

“Back up.”

Arthur’s face twisted.

“You have always been selfish, Clara.”

I almost laughed.

“You hit my daughter, stole her money, and followed me to the hospital.”

“You walked away from the party and made everyone think I’m some kind of criminal.”

“You are standing in front of a police officer admitting to multiple crimes.”

His face turned red.

“You ungrateful little—”

“Finish that sentence.”

Officer Ramirez’s voice was low.

Arthur stopped.

Another patrol car pulled into the parking lot.

Arthur glanced toward it.

Then he looked at me one final time.

“If you open that folder, you will lose everyone.”

I held Gigi tighter.

“I already lost them in that living room.”

Arthur climbed back into his truck.

Before driving away, he rolled down the window.

“Mom and Dad will take Gigi from you before they let you destroy this family.”

My stomach dropped.

Arthur drove away.

Officer Ramirez turned toward me.

“Has anyone threatened to seek custody before?”

“My mother has joked about it.”

“That did not sound like a joke.”

Dana, the social worker, stepped outside.

“We need to make a safety plan tonight.”

I nodded.

Then another car raced into the lot.

My cousin Daniel climbed out before it had completely stopped.

He was twenty-three and had spent most of the party filming videos for my niece.

His face was pale.

“Clara!”

Officer Ramirez stopped him.

“Who are you?”

“Daniel Morris.”

He held up his phone.

“I was at the party.”

I stepped closer.

“What happened?”

“Your mother told everyone to delete their videos.”

My skin turned cold.

“Why?”

“Because I caught the slap.”

He unlocked his phone.

“I started recording when Gigi went near the balloons.”

The video began with laughter.

My niece was opening a present.

Gigi toddled toward the centerpiece.

Arthur watched her approach.

He was not surprised.

He was waiting.

Then he glanced toward my father.

Dad gave him a tiny nod.

Arthur stepped forward and slapped Gigi.

The sound was even worse on video.

I nearly dropped the phone.

“They planned it.”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“There’s more.”

He replayed the final seconds.

As I carried Gigi toward the door, Arthur leaned toward my father.

His voice was faint, but clear enough to hear.

“She reacted exactly like you said she would.”

My blood went cold.

Then my father answered.

“Good.”

May you like

He looked toward the camera without realizing Daniel was recording.

“Now we can prove she’s unstable.”
